Mission-Aransas Reserve

The Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve is a federal and state partnership that conducts research, education, and stewardship programs.

The Mission-Aransas Reserve is administered by the University of Texas, but works in partnership with the following organizations to ensure that the goals of the Reserve are met: Texas General Land Office, United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Coastal Bend Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, Fennessey Ranch, Texas Department of Transportation, Coastal Bend Bays & Estuary Program, and a representative from the local community.

National Estuaries Week is almost here! 🌊🌿

We have a week full of fun, hands-on activities planned—from nature art and animal encounters to fishing, marine invertebrates, seashell mosaics, and more!

The time has come! A public meeting will be held as part of the federal performance evaluation of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve. If you wish to attend, please register at https://forms.gle/KE6sjVSQfcqhy4VB6 by Tuesday, September 1st, 2026 at 6 p.m. CT. Information about attending the virtual and in-person meeting will be sent to all registered participants. The purpose of the meeting is to receive public comments regarding the operation and implementation of the Reserve.

Fieldwork Friday! 🛶 💦 ☀️

A couple weeks ago, we paddled out to our monitoring sites at Egery Flats. With all our gear loaded onto the kayaks, we made our way from site to site collecting measurements and servicing the porewater wells so they’re ready for another round of data collection.

Just another day in the field! 🤩

Perfect weather for a SWMP run yesterday! ☀️🌊

SWMP, or the System-Wide Monitoring Program, is a standardized monitoring program spanning the nation’s 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves.

At five stations, we swapped out the instruments that collect water and weather data every 15 minutes.

SWMP keeps tabs on the health of the country’s coasts!

For this week’s , we assembled and installed monofilament recycling bins along Fish Pass on Mustang Island 🎣 ♻️

By giving anglers a place to dispose of used fishing line, these bins help reduce marine debris and protect coastal wildlife!

Let’s congratulate our 🌟 Margaret A. Davidson Fellow 🌟, Kelley Savage, on delivering a captivating dissertation defense 🎓, “Potential role of oyster reefs in carbon sequestration: implications for reef conservation and restoration.” 🦪🌊

Her research addresses a glaring information gap, revealing the extent to which oyster reefs act as carbon “sinks” 🌱 and their contribution to the long-term burial of carbon— a critical component in understanding their role in the carbon cycle 🔄🌍.
