Social Security benefits are an important source of economic security for millions of older adults. Currently, over 54 million retired workers receive Social Security retirement benefits, two million spouses of retired workers receive benefits on that worker’s record, and three and a half million widows or widowers receive benefits on the record of their deceased spouse each month.
Beneficiaries age 65 and older make up more than 80% of those receiving Social Security benefits. Half of older adults rely on Social Security for the majority of their income; for 25% of older adults, Social Security makes up at least 90% of their income.
In this webinar, Social Security Benefits for Older Adults, presenters will introduce important concepts for retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits, and will provide advocates with the ins and outs of the rules covering these benefits. The information in this webinar will cover the basics of Social Security benefits and will be most useful for those who are new to these benefits, or those who would like a refresher on these concepts.

We are pleased to honor Lorraine Brown as the Volunteer of the Month for June. When some caregivers unable to support their loved ones, some volunteers just step up and go above and beyond. That’s exactly what Lorraine Brown did. She learned how to change a patient to help the caregiver who was unable to do it on their own. She visited several times a week, explored caregiving resources and alternative living options, and provided a steady, listening presence as this family faced enormous challenges. And Lorraine does this because “It’s because of the connections with the people in hospice – the staff and other volunteers as well as the patients and their families. These feel real and meaningful; and I carry that with me in the rest of my life. It’s what helps me feel human.“ In recognition of her kindness, Lorraine will enjoy a gift certificate from The Oak Table Cafe Sequim.
