Happy World Ocean Day!

This year's World Ocean Day theme celebrates the importance of strong marine protected areas and the role they play in protecting ocean ecosystems for future generations.

For more than two decades, we've been proud to partner with NOAA's Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary to connect our community with the incredible marine life and habitats of the Olympic Coast. Together, we've inspired ocean stewardship through programs like our Junior Oceanographer Summer Camp and our annual speaker series.

We're also excited to continue working together to bring the Olympic Coast Exploration Center to life. In the meantime, you can explore the sanctuary and learn more about our local marine environment by visiting the Olympic Coast Discovery Center!

For more information, visit: https://olympiccoast.noaa.gov/visitor/discovery-center.html

Today, and every day, we celebrate our oceans and the partnerships that help protect them. Happy World Ocean Day!

We’re pleased to share our newly released annual report, highlighting a year of growth, resilience, and community impact. This report reflects the collective efforts of our staff, volunteers, partners, supporters, and visitors who helped move our mission forward over the past year.

You will find updates on major milestones, program achievements, financial stewardship, and the progress being made toward the future of marine education and community science on the Olympic Peninsula. From expanding public engagement opportunities to advancing plans for the Olympic Coast Exploration Center, this past year demonstrated the power of collaboration and shared vision.

The report also celebrates the people who make this work possible. Every educational program delivered, every animal care effort supported, and every visitor inspired is connected to a community that believes in protecting and understanding our coastal ecosystems.

We invite you to read the full report and learn more about the work, partnerships, and momentum shaping this exciting chapter for Feiro. Our deepest thanks to Board volunteers, Laurel Black (for her stellar design) and Barb Maynes (for her copyediting skills). With appreciation to Board member Mary Campbell for the use of her long-tailed duck photo for the cover.

Parking Alert!

As they get set up for the North Olympic Discovery Marathon, City Pier parking restrictions are in place. We recommend parking in the lots numbered 6 or 5 in order to visit Feiro for the rest of this week. On Race Day, Sunday June 7th, the lot marked 9 in green (there is also a lot marked 9 in blue) and listed as lot 9 on the Legend is the best place to park to get down to Feiro. We will be open regular hours 10am-4pm (we are closed Tuesdays).

Thanks for your understanding if you are visiting during this fun event for our region!

Today marks the final Watershed Field Trip of the school year!

This year, we connected with more than 300 students across 14 fourth grade classrooms throughout Port Angeles and surrounding communities through one of our most beloved education programs.

Students begin by learning about watersheds and data collection in their classrooms before heading out into the field to follow Peabody Creek from the mountains to the ocean. Starting in Olympic National Park, students hike nearly 3 miles through forests, neighborhoods, roads, and the city before ending their journey at Feiro Marine Life Center.

Along the way, students test water quality at different sites, observe habitat health, and discover how the land, roads, bridges, and culverts all impact the waterways around us. By following the creek’s journey to the harbor, students gain a hands-on understanding of how connected we are to the ecosystems right in our own backyards.

The photos shared show students’ “before and after” drawings of what they think a watershed is, highlighting just how much they learn throughout the program. Many students begin the experience having never heard the word “watershed,” and leave with a deeper understanding of how human actions directly influence the health of our local environment and wildlife.
