Thanks to all who have joined the page. Today I've learned the following:
1) the current proposal is in its early stages and would only impact cafeteria workers.
2) nothing has been decided; the Board is only researching options.
3) while this type of research has been done before, the primary reason for it happening now is due to tax revenue declines in the district. Tax revenues have declined due to population decline, and population has declined due to the lack of viable, sustainable employment in the region/area. Frankly, it's a vicious cycle and the school budget is being impacted.
4) Two teachers, one local and one from St. Mary's have reached out, along with a Board member who I'm planning to speak to soon to gain understanding.
My feelings after day 1 are that things are going well. There is obviously passion and spirit in the community to do what's best. The momentum and popularity of the page should continue to gain strength as we gather more information. And trusted sources with factual information are willing to talk. These are all positive signs.
Thank you to all who will be supporting this effort. Please continue to share the page as strength in numbers will be a very valuable tool for us to leverage.
On a personal note, for those who haven't met me personally, thank you for the opportunity to serve my hometown from afar. To anyone who ever had the pleasure of visiting Henry's Store and knowing my grandparents, Henry & Norma, I hope you know you're in good hands. For those who know my Dad, Butch, know I'm a straight shooter just like him and I will always be honest about what I know or don't know. I may be 2 hours away, but Port Allegany will always be my home and I hope to make a difference with our collective efforts.
Best regards - have a great day tomorrow!
