Mita Oyate is committed to sustaining the Lakota Way of Life by helping individuals understand the significance and meaning of the traditional cultural practices and teachings that are deeply embedded in the songs, dance and spoken word. an esteemed Lakota educator who founded the original Mita Oyate in 1982 for the youth he mentored on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. He was a man who

believed that life was precious, saw the good in people and dedicated himself to continuing the teachings and traditions of the Lakota for generations to come. Warfield Sr.’s kind manner and steadfast commitment made him well-respected and beloved by his students, fellow teachers and the community at large. In 1982, the Mita Oyate society was unique as one of the few places nurturing Lakota values and teachings. In 2013, Warfield’s son, Warfield Moose Jr., brought the society back to continue the work and the teachings his father began. Mita Oyate literally means “my people,” but its meaning and purpose centers around the gathering and sharing the wisdom of the relatives and teachers who went before us. always said, “People change, but the ceremonies and songs have to stay the same to preserve this way of life.”

composed by Warfield Moose Jr.

The early morning hour of 3 am signaled the start of our Lakota Sundance ceremony in Porcupine, SD. My Tahunsi (cousin) Doni Has No Horse, who had been part of our ceremony for the last 23 years, lay resting in his sweat lodge. As I entered, he greeted me with a playful but deadpan tone. "Gee Tahunsi, I was starting to wonder when you would finally arrive. It's getting late." His words made me happy, and I knew it was going to be a great day.

I cherish the conversations and memories Tahunsi shared with us, especially those about his grandparents Dawson and Emily Has No Horse. He spoke fondly about what they taught him and experiences they had, generously sharing their lives through the stories.

Tahunsi Doni reminded us that although his Grandfather Mato Wakan (Dawson) was no longer with us, his spirit and teachings lived on.

There were times when Tahunsi felt saddened by the ways of the younger generation, who seemed to stray from the teachings. But he also understood they were making their own path just as he did when he was chosen to live the life of a heyoka. He followed in the footsteps of his ancestors and learning from his grandparents.

Today, as we celebrate the memory of Iyoyanpa Hoksila, Donavan Has No Horse, I recall how he would call his mother and sing her a birthday song in honor of her bringing him into this world. This tradition and teaching continues to hold a special place in the hearts of his Sundance family. Today marks the birthday of Iyoyanpa Hoksila, a day we will always remember and celebrate with love and gratitude.

My father was someone who greeted everyone with a smile and a handshake. He taught us to acknowledge others, especially our elders, who appreciated it and had earned that respect. He was a living example of his teachings and when he said be happy, he meant it.

Even though he faced many challenges, he always found something to be grateful for, especially how precious life is.

Today on his birthday, I offer this teaching in honor of my father who showed us that even in hard times, we can still choose to be happy – iyuskinyan unpo.
