🏈 Meet Our Back River Bulls President – Derek πŸ‚

Derek's journey with the Back River Bulls began in 1990 when he first put on a football helmet as a young athlete in the program. One of the biggest influences in his life was the league's founder, Keke Goodson, who became both a mentor and father figure. That relationship helped shape not only the coach Derek would become, but the leader he is today.

After proudly serving eight years in the U.S. Army, Derek returned home in 2015 when Keke's son, Derek Goodson, invited him to help coach. What started as lending a hand on the field quickly grew into a lifelong commitment to the organization. Since then, Derek has served as a coach, Vice President, and has proudly led the Back River Bulls as President since 2017.

Throughout his years with the Bulls, Derek has been part of multiple Super Bowl Championship teams as both a Head Coach and Assistant Coach. While those victories are special, he says his greatest accomplishment has been helping build a strong leadership team behind the scenes. He believes the future of the organization depends on dedicated volunteers, committed coaches, and leaders who continue to uphold the values that have defined the Back River Bulls for generations.

Being President means much more than a title. It means late-night phone calls, long weekends, preparing fields, solving problems, making difficult decisions, and always putting the kids first.
Through it all, Derek remains committed to the Bulls' long-standing philosophy:

❀️ "No Kid Left Behind."

That mission is what keeps him coming back year after year. For Derek, it's about the kids, the families, and the community. He believes football teaches resilience, discipline, teamwork, passion, leadership, and perseveranceβ€”life lessons that extend far beyond the football field.

As he looks toward one day passing the torch, Derek's goal is simple: leave the organization stronger than he found it. Since 1994, the Back River Bulls have earned 40+ Super Bowl Championships and 230+ playoff appearances, making the program one of the most successful youth football organizations in the region. He knows that tradition will continue because of the incredible board members, coaches, volunteers, and families who invest their time and hearts into every season.

When asked what he enjoys most, Derek doesn't hesitate:

✨ Friday night lights.

Watching young athletes grow into confident players, strong leaders, and outstanding people makes every long day worth it.

Thank you, Derek, for your unwavering dedication, leadership, and countless hours of service to the Back River Bulls. Your commitment has impacted generations of athletes, and your legacy will continue to inspire those who wear the maroon and black for years to come.

πŸ“£ Meet Coach Morgan! 🏈

We're excited to introduce Coach Morgan, who is entering her fourth season coaching with the Back River Bulls with 8U Cheer!

Morgan's love for cheerleading began at a young age, cheering throughout her childhood and high school years. She proudly cheered for both the Back River Panthers and Poquoson Bulls cheer programs before the organizations merged into what is now BRB.

She spent her first two seasons coaching our Mini cheerleaders before moving up with many of those same athletes to coach the Mites. One of Morgan's favorite parts of coaching is watching the girls she started with continue to grow in confidence and skill as they advance through the program. She also loves introducing new athletes to the exciting world of cheerleading and helping them build a strong foundation.

Outside of cheer, Morgan is a second-grade teacher at Poquoson Primary School, where she enjoys inspiring and encouraging children both in the classroom and on the sidelines.

Coach Morgan is excited to welcome back many familiar faces while also meeting and coaching lots of new athletes this season. She can't wait to see what this team accomplishes, and we know it's going to be an amazing year!

Please join us in wishing Coach Morgan the best of luck this season! πŸ–€πŸ“£πŸˆ

🌟 Board Member Spotlight: Emma Fox 🌟

Meet Emma Fox, our Team Mom Coordinator and Spirit Wear Coordinator!

Emma brings over 12 years of experience as a head coach, assistant coach, and team mom. Her journey began when her daughter joined Poquoson football and cheer at just 5 years old. Through the years, Emma remained dedicated to the program, continuing through the merger and proudly serving on the Back River Bulls Board today. Now, her daughter is cheering at the high school level, while her son continues his football journey on our 10U team after starting in flag football.

When she's not at the football field, you'll find Emma cheering on her son at the baseball field or supporting her daughter in competition dance and competitive cheer. During the summer, her favorite place to be is soaking up the sun at the beach whenever she gets a free day!

🎀 Hidden Talent: Emma loves to sing! She participated in show choir throughout high school and even had the honor of singing the National Anthem at Langley Speedway.

❀️ What Emma Loves Most About Back River Bulls:
"Back River Bulls is more than just football and cheerβ€”it's a community. We've built friendships that extend far beyond the field. Our kids go to school together, play other sports together, and grow up together. It's a built-in support system for our families. Watching the kids improve, succeed, and gain confidence each week makes all the practices, planning, and hard work worth it."

Thank you, Emma, for your years of dedication, leadership, and passion for our athletes and families. We are grateful to have you as part of the Back River Bulls family! πŸˆπŸ“£

🌟 Meet Our Cheerleading Commissioner – Ashley Whiteside! 🌟

Ashley joined Back River in 2016, stepping into the roles of both Cheerleading Commissioner and Head Coach. She proudly served as a head coach through 2024 while continuing to lead and grow our cheer program.

We’re excited to introduce Ashley Wood, our Concessions Coordinator for the upcoming season!

Ashley is joining the BRB board for the first time, but she’s been part of the Back River Bulls family since 2022 and has proudly served as a team mom for the past 2 years, heading into her third season this year.

A little about Ashley:
🎣 Fun Fact: Ashley loves to go fishing!

πŸ’¬ Favorite Quote: β€œSome pursue happiness, others create it.”

Jeremy has been coaching with Back River for 6 years, serving 4 years as an assistant coach and 2 years as a head coach. His passion for sports and developing young athletes is evident in everything he does on and off the field.

πŸ’¬ Why do you love coaching?
