Save Popponesset Bay Key Goals:
1. Take actions to ensure stability of the spit and the inner and outer navigation channels.
2.

Save Popponesset Bay, is a 501c3 organization with the mission of keeping the waterways in and around Popponesset Bay safe and navigable and to protect the Spit, an endangered species habitat. Maintain required permits with State of Massachusetts and Town of Mashpee
3. Monitor beach integrity periodically by conducting required engineering evaluations
4. Work with Town of Mashpee to ensure that dr

edging activities within Popponesset Bay, and the channel linking Popponesset Bay to Nantucket Sound results in significant annual sand replenishment along the spit.
5. Educate users of the spit about their responsibilities
6. Develop and maintain strong partnerships with like-minded organizations
7. Put in place programs and activities to broaden communication and outreach designed to reach more potential supporters and donors

🚨 We’re breaking ground! 🚨

After 12 years of planning and fundraising, the Longer, Wider, Deeper Spit Restoration Project is officially underway! The County Dredge has arrived in Popponesset Bay and staging has begun—making this one of the largest dredging projects on Cape Cod and the largest ever in Mashpee.

This project will expand the Popponesset Bay channel, restore our barrier beach, and protect vital wildlife habitat—all thanks to YOUR support. 💙

⚠️ Important Reminders:
• Pipes are being placed on the beach, and dredging begins late this week.
• Boaters: use extreme caution and watch for marked dredge pipes in the channel.
• Spit Lovers: the Bay side stays OPEN, but the Sound side will be closed starting 9/16 while work is underway.

The Future of Popponesset Bay Is In Our Hands — And It Starts NOW!

We’re thrilled to announce a historic milestone: All final permits are approved for the Longer, Wider, Deeper Restoration Project — the largest coastal resilience effort in our community’s history!

After more than a decade of science, planning, and partnership, construction is set to begin September 2025 with the amazing team at Barnstable County Dredge.

Why This Matters:
Popponesset Spit & Bay are on the front lines of erosion and rising seas. This once-in-a-generation project will protect and preserve them for future generations.

🌊 Rebuilding with up to 80,000 cubic yards of sand
🌊 Expanded dredging to improve navigation + replenish the Spit
🌊 Sediment catch basin to extend channel life
🌊 Resilient design to fight storms & sea level rise

Together, we can safeguard this critical ecosystem and cherished place we all love. But we need YOUR support to bring it to life.
