The 'Friends of the Park' membership drive is an essential means of raising funds to cover annual maintenance costs. Over the past few years, garden maintenance expenses have been primarily funded through grants; however, this year, we did not receive any grant funding. To ensure the park gardens ongoing success, we will seek out alternative funding methods.

Please consider being a 'Friend of the Park' member.

The Pearl River County Extension staff and a few Master Gardeners hosted a farewell luncheon for Eddie Smith, expressing both appreciation and good-natured humor as we bid him farewell. We will miss him greatly, but we wished him well in his future endeavors and playfully reminded him that he remains available for consultation. Thank you, Eddie, for your dedication to our community, Extension, and programs; your contributions will be deeply missed. Much success in your new position. I am sure we all will see you around.

This afternoon, I had the privilege of seeing Dr. Blair Sampson, USDA-ARS Entomologist, passionately photographing pollinators and insects within the community park gardens.
So thrilled and honored that he was photographing in our gardens...makes you feel good about why the gardens were created.

I extend my sincere thanks to Phyllis Goodwin, April Grecho, Heather Ashley Boyd, Amy Chouest, for their exceptional work in the sweltering heat. I want to also tell Gem (Amy's daughter) I was so pleased to meet her. She hung out with us in this heat. Collectively, we eliminated the w**ds that had encroached upon the gardens and successfully planted flowers in the planters and two rear beds. I chose to leave intact the 6-8 zinnias that had sprouted beyond their designated areas. So no one point it out while visiting the gardens. 😂 We cleaned the grass out where the front sign is and filled with brown mulch.

The team's perseverance and dedication were truly commendable, and I appreciate their efforts. It was a productive day, notwithstanding the challenging weather conditions. It was "HOT" ...

If you see the ladies in town... thank them for helping in the Poplarville City Park Gardens. The gardens are for the enjoyment of the community and all the pollinators that visit them. The ladies truly made a difference.

This week we have some mulch being donated by Amy Chouest. I will be sharing more information about the mulch once we get it in the beds.

Again, if you can help us by donating a bag or two of soil it would really help us get the gardens back in shape.

Come grow with us!! 🌻

The Poplarville 4-H JMG Pollinator Gardens and planters are being stocked with a trunk full of plants and several bags of brown mulch, generously funded by 4-H JMG. Progress updates will be shared throughout the week. The gardens are in urgent need of soil to replenish several depleted boxes. Donations of soil bags would be greatly appreciated. Furthermore, a mulch donation is scheduled for this Thursday or Friday, and assistance will be needed to distribute it to the raised beds. Individuals can become a Friend of the Park Member starting June 15th by contacting the Pearl River County Extension Office, with all annual membership proceeds supporting the gardens' annual maintenance. Your contribution will help sustain a haven for pollinators, particularly the Monarchs, during their spring & fall migration. Membership has 4 tiers to choose to become a member. Membership is yearly. (July 2026-July 2027)

This week is dedicated to making improvements to the 4-H JMG Pollinator Gardens in Poplarville City Park. I want to extend a special thank you to Phyllis Goodwin, Master Gardener and 4-H JMG Leader, and Doug Goodwin for their efforts in cleaning the park's signs, including the City Jubilee sign, on Sunday morning. The gardens require additional soil, and we are seeking donations. If you have bags of soil to spare or would like to purchase some for donation, please call Roxann Gort at 504-234-3579 to coordinate drop-off. I will be working in the park on Tuesday, June 9th, from 4:30-6pm and would appreciate any help with the garden. Our aim is to ensure the gardens are in excellent condition for the Jubilee. The 4-H JMG Pollinator Gardens in Poplarville City Park, a proud recipient of state and local recognition and numerous awards, requires community support to sustain its operations. As the garden's coordinator, I am committed to its upkeep but require funding and volunteers to do so effectively. Following the absence of grant funding this year, I am exploring alternative avenues to ensure the garden's continued success. Becoming a Friend of the Park member is one way to contribute, with four tier options available from July 1st, 2026, to July 1st, 2027. Your membership will play a significant role in maintaining the garden's state, local, and national standing. The gardens are nationally registered as a Monarch Waystation through Monarch Watch. Donations of soil and mulch would also be beneficial. I will be tending to the gardens this week and welcome any assistance. I would like to extend thanks to Mr. Donald for his assistance with the garden debris removal and acknowledge the city's prompt response for pickup.

For more information on becoming a member of the park, soil and mulch donations, or volunteering a few hours a year, contact me directly. Roxann Gort, Master Gardener, 4-H JMG Program Leader/Coordinator. 504-234-3579

💯% of membership money will go into the park gardens. 4-H is a non-profit organization federally recognized as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) charitable entity. Donations are tax-deductible as allowed by law.

The Poplarville City Park Pollinator Gardens are set for an uplift next week, subject to weather conditions. Following a site visit, I undertook some preliminary work, including w**d removal and taking down birdhouses that were deteriorating. Community folks are welcome to join the effort. With enough help we can knock this out in a few hours. Would like to see the gardens look good for the Jubilee.

Certain plants earn a permanent place in gardens not just for their beauty, but for the way they show up year after year without fuss.

Echinacea coneflowers fall squarely into that category for me. They bring a dependable splash of color, attract pollinators by the dozens and carry an easygoing charm that fits right in with a Southern landscape.

I’ve grown coneflowers for years, and they’ve never let me down. They stand tall and bloom with enthusiasm through heat, humidity and the occasional dry spell. Watching their blooms sway gently while pollinators move from flower to flower is a simple pleasure that never gets old.

Among the many varieties available today, one that has truly impressed me is the Cheyenne Spirit coneflower. If you’ve never grown it, you’re missing out on a real showstopper.

This variety produces a vibrant mix of colors ranging from rich reds, warm oranges, sunny yellows, soft pinks to creamy whites. Growing Cheyenne Spirit coneflower is like having an entire bouquet living out in the garden.

Take a closer look at those colors, and you’ll see just how much personality each bloom brings.

The deep reds are bold and velvety, often with dark, prominent cones at the center that seem to anchor the flower with a bit of drama. The oranges range from glowing tangerine to a deeper, burnt copper tone, catching the sunlight in a way that makes them appear to shimmer in the heat.

The yellows are bright and cheerful. Some have a clear golden hue while others are softened with hints of amber. Then there are the pinks, which can shift from a soft, blush to a richer rose color, sometimes with subtle gradients that fade toward the petal tips. These blooms feel delicate, adding a gentle contrast to the bolder shades.

The creamy whites offer a clean, refreshing look, often surrounding a golden or greenish cone that gives them a classic, daisy-like appeal.

When all these colors grow together, the effect is dynamic, with no two clusters looking the same.

Another thing I appreciate about Cheyenne Spirit is its toughness.

This coneflower handles our summers with ease and keeps right on blooming when other plants begin to fade. The flowers rise on sturdy stems, creating a natural, slightly wild look that feels right at home in both formal beds and more relaxed, cottage-style plantings.

Last year, I had the pleasure of watching a new generation of gardeners get their hands in the soil when the Pearl River County 4-H Junior Master Gardeners created a pollinator garden at my office. It was a special project full of enthusiasm and learning, and I was especially glad to see them include Cheyenne Spirit coneflowers in their design.

I’m happy to report that those coneflowers didn’t just survive, they thrived.

Right now, they’re putting on a beautiful display in the pollinator garden with bright, cheerful blooms that seem to glow in the sunlight. Even better, they’re doing exactly what they were meant to do -- draw in bees, butterflies and other pollinators that bring the whole garden to life.

Coneflowers like Cheyenne Spirit remind me why I garden in the first place.

They’re reliable, colorful and full of life, and when you see them thriving in a space created by young hands, it makes them even more special. If you’re looking to add something dependable and colorful to your landscape, this plant is well worth the space.
