Thank You to the Fort Peck Tribes Office of Environmental Protection
We appreciate OEP for providing our community with these fruiting shrubs and trees. Below is a short summary of how chokecherries can be grown.
Full document link with more shrubs is found here:https://extension-store.montana.edu/assets/publications/montguidepdfs/mt200208ag-minor-stone-fruit.pdf

Chokecherry fruit ripens about 10 weeks after flowering. The whole cluster is harvested at once, and each shrub can produce around 30 pounds of fruit, with 350–1,100 berries per pound.

They grow best in full sun and in moist but well‑drained soils, and they do not tolerate salty soils. They perform well in a soil pH range of 6–8.

Dormant plants 20–40 inches tall should be transplanted in early spring or late fall, spaced 6 feet apart in rows 20 feet apart. Spring‑planted shrubs should be cut back to 8 inches to encourage branching; fall‑planted shrubs are cut back the following spring.

Young plants need 1 gallon of water per week, increasing to 4–5 gallons every two weeks in the second year. Too much water can cause fruit cracking, poor flavor, and root problems.

Fertilizer needs vary, but pale leaves or short shoot growth indicate the need for more nitrogen.

Young plants: 2 lbs actual nitrogen per plant per year

Mature shrubs: 1 lb actual nitrogen per plant per year
Apply in early spring or late fall.

Light pruning keeps shrubs productive. Remove weak or damaged branches, open the center of the plant, and remove older wood so most shoots are 1–4 years old, which produce the best fruit.

If you don’t see information about your specific tree in this summary, please feel free to reach out — we are happy to help you find the right details for your plant.
