All,

Jim Groce here with info about the pistol match coming up on Saturday, NOV 8, 2025 on Range A at 8:00 a.m.

See the attached for each stage's course of fire. Print them out if you want your own hardcopy. Decided to keep things easy this time. If you've got a wheel gun or a gun you'd like to try in a match - say, like a SIG 365 when you usually use a 2011 - this might be the course of fire to try that.

Things are getting lined up to brace up the trailer. It's not there yet but should be in the near future. Meanwhile, we'll just try to be very careful with it so that we can haul our steel targets out on it.

I've been working on the little green cart, the drive system, etc. It's not as good as I'd like yet so I left it out from the course of fire this time. I'll get it going reliably soon.

See you Saturday morning.

Jim

RANGE C ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK
This will shut the range down during these maintenance activities.

We discussed this at the board meeting on Thursday, 18 SEP 25.
Here's the plan. And you all are welcome, no, invited to participate in all or parts of it. Bring tools on Saturday - such as: battery powered drills, extra batteries, drill bits, nut drivers, sockets, socket extensions, ratchets, level, shovel, maybe even a pry bar and a screwdriver. (Mark your tools so that you get them back - a piece of tape with initials works.)

You can let everyone know if you're going to participate and which parts by a quick "I'm in" comment below - nothing more. Please do not comment if you won't be there.

Sunday, 21 SEP 25, 1:00 p.m.:
Jon Kitts and I will be at the range to take inventory of parts needed (PVC pipes, clamps, screws) for the Range C target frame holders. We'll walk the range and inspect things to try to ensure we've thought things through and we will likely try to determine which Range C shooting positions are excess (i.e., not lined up with a shooting bench) and so to be taken out. Also, we may make some efforts to line up and mark where each 200 yard and 250 yard target frame holder position should be located to be in straight alignment with its corresponding in-line bench. When we're done we should have nine shooting positions.

mid-week:
We will complete the purchase of the needed parts and have them ready for Saturday's installation effort. The plan is to keep the target frames the same height as they've been. To account for the elevation drop across the range from west to east and to adjust the target frame area visible to the shooter from the bench, the re-positioned target frame holders will use a stop (a bolt with nut through the PVC pipe) to establish the bottom position for that target frame leg. We'll use a string line and with a couple of string line levels from the west-most target frame leg's top to the east-most target frame leg's top (we'll put a string across the all of the positions) and that's how we'll know where the bolt goes in the PVC pipe for each target frame leg.

Saturday, 27 SEP 25, 9:00 a.m.:
We'll be continuing the work from step 1 above. We will complete installation of the eighteen (9 on 200 yard line, 9 on 250 yard line).

All, Jim Groce here.

Today is the 2-week anniversary of re-opening Range C. If you read the article in the newsletter, then you know that I recommended that you recheck your rifle's zero on Range B before shooting on Range C in an effort to ensure you didn't inadvertently hit the second baffle. And, if you did hit the baffle, please contact me.

These are some pictures I took yesterday, 9-10-25. As you can tell from the number of different groups of hits on the downrange baffle, we have among our club members some who fired shots downrange, couldn't tell where their bullets went, but continued to repeatedly shoot more. That is apparent from the large number of shots in various groupings. This is unacceptable. Destruction of club property has consequences. You are responsible for your projectiles you send downrange. While these baffles are built to be robust, they - just like anything else - can't take continual abuse.

Range C target frames and the target frame holders (on the cross ties) remain as another near term and needed item on our To Do list. We're an all volunteer club. We'll be putting together a team to get this work done soon - looking tentatively at Saturday, September 27.

This posting is to remind everyone to be safe and to protect the club's property.

All,

Jim Groce here with info about the pistol match coming up on Saturday, SEP 13, 2025 on Range A at 8:00 a.m.

EARLY SETUP
We'll do the course setup at - 7:30 a.m. to beat the heat, i.e., ensuring we're done before the heat arrives for the day. As we've been doing to save time, we'll do the course briefing on Range A, and then on to the match.

See the attached for each stage's course of fire. Print them out if you want your own hardcopy.

That's a lot of toys to haul out and set up. I definitely need your help for set up and tear down and score keeping and pasting the holes on the three paper targets on the movers. With the trailer now converted over (OK, after Wednesday it'll be all done, and a big thanks to everyone who helped get it ready - Trailer) for hauling the toys out, that part should be easier though.

NEW TOYS
The list of new toys being used for the first time in this match:

bowling pin AR500 targets
Bigfoot AR500 target
new green cart with target with no need for rails
new, faster (100 RPM, replacing 50 RPM) motor for rail mounted moving target system.
This should get 14 fps speed, which is what is needed for the Tueller drill.

MOVING TARGETS - NEED DRIVERS
I'll need a couple of people to drive the movers. Note that the targets on the movers are only valid targets while the mover is in front of that Stage's set of targets. Read that last sentence again - cause I know someone is going to shoot the targets after the movers are outside the zone. So, how are we going to know where the zone starts and ends? I'm thinking we just paint an orange stripe right there on the ground between the various stages.

(BTW, the movers' targets aren't hard to hit, and they only require one hit each. Their purpose is to be a distraction to the specified order and number of hits on the stage. The movers require you to focus on what you're doing and put your shots on places with deliberation.)

SUL
Just to try something new, we'll be starting Stage 1 using the SUL position, facing downrange toward the targets with an unloaded firearm.

For Stages 2 through 4, we'll start at the low ready with a loaded firearm. Note that there will be no drawing from the holster with a loaded firearm in this match. So, if you have that SIG 320 and want to use it, you're good to go.

What is the SUL position? Glad you asked. I'll demonstrate before we start the first stage. Until then, feel free to familiarize yourself with it via these videos:

See you Saturday morning.

Jim Groce here with info for the August 9, 2025 pistol match once more we'll be doing the NRA short gallery course of fire on Range F from 8:00 a.m. until noon. The competition will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Here is a link to the NRA rules for this type of competition:
https://competitions.nra.org/media/8917/2023-precision-pistol-rules.pdf

As we've been doing for this style of competition, we'll be deviating from the NRA rules just a bit by allowing the use of two-handed shooting for those who choose to do that.

There are 8 categories for this match - so bring a couple of guns:

iron sights, one-handed for center fire handguns
iron sights, one-handed for .22 caliber handguns

iron sights, two-handed for center fire handguns
iron sights, two-handed for .22 caliber handguns

optics, one-handed for center fire handguns
optics, one-handed for .22 caliber handguns

optics, two-handed for center fire handguns
optics, two-handed for .22 caliber handguns

The distance for this match is 15 yards, on Range F.

Course of fire
Slow fire - 10 rounds within 10 minutes.
Timed fire - two strings of five within 20 seconds per string.
Rapid fire - two strings of five within 10 seconds per string.

See you there!
Jim

All,

Jim Groce here with info about the pistol match coming up on Saturday, July 12, 2025 on Range F at 8:00 a.m.

For this pistol match we'll be doing the NRA short gallery course of fire on Range F from 8:00 a.m. until noon.

I'm out of town for a bit, so Jon Kitts will be conducting the match.

Here is a link to the NRA rules for this type of competition:
https://competitions.nra.org/media/8917/2023-precision-pistol-rules.pdf

As we did in last year's match for this style of competition, we'll be deviating from the NRA rules just a bit by allowing the use of two-handed shooting for those who choose to do that.

There are 8 categories for this match - so bring a couple of guns:
- iron sights, one-handed for center fire handguns

- optics , two-handed for center fire handguns
- optics, two-handed for .22 caliber handguns

The distance for this match is 15 yards, on Range F.

Course of fire
Slow fire - 10 rounds within 10 minutes.
Timed fire - two strings of five within 20 seconds per string.
Rapid fire - two strings of five within 10 seconds per string.

Each round (slow, timed, rapid) of the course of fire is shot on its own target.

So, you'll have three targets constituting a set for the course of fire.

In past years, we've had plenty of time and so run the course of fire multiple times. That gives you the opportunity to try multiple guns with different optics types or calibers and/or one-handed or two-handed.

Please remember to mark each of your three targets so with your category (.22/center fire, iron sights/optics, one-hand/two-hands). That's needed to put your score for that target set in the proper place.

If someone could take a picture or two of the match and send them to me, that'd be appreciated.
Thanks.
Jim

All,

Jim Groce here with info about the pistol match scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2025 on Range A.

We had some pretty good rain overnight. More is headed this way. So, as much as it pains me, I must admit defeat and cancel Saturday's pistol match.

The ground on Range A won't have enough time to dry out even if there was no more rain. You get to sleep in Saturday morning.

July and August Matches
For the past several years, we've done a variation of the NRA bullseye course of fire for July and August.
That's still the plan this year. However, I will be out during July and will look for someone to run that match.

We all know who that person might be, but I can't presume that just yet!

Trailer for Pistol Match Steel Targets - MAY 2025

Evan Rowe, Ron Robertson, Brent McCallum and Jim Groce re-purposed the old trailer that had the "gravity" mover. Now we'll put our steel targets on it, wheel it out to the range for pistol match day, and more quickly set up targets for the match.
