Serving Behind the Scenes...Meet Church Life Director and Elder, Greg Lucas Welcome back to our leadership spotlight series! Over the past few weeks, we’ve introduced you to our church president, financial secretary, and head elder. This week, we are turning the spotlight over to Greg.
A Heart for Family, Fun, and the Outdoors
Outside of his church duties, Greg spends much of his time with his family—whether he's driving his kids to lessons and work or helping them with homework. When it’s time to recharge, you might find him outside grilling, playing darts and co****le, or playing Catan with his family. He also enjoys TV shows like Gold Rush and The Curse of Oak Island that highlight problem-solving and perseverance.
A Faith Built on Legacy and Resilience
Greg’s faith journey was heavily influenced by his parents. His father knew Scripture off the top of his head, went on mission trips to Macau and Haiti, and enjoyed witnessing to Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses at his front door. His mother (whom most of you know as Lois) was the only one who could correct his dad on Scripture (!), joining him on mission trips whenever she could.
Before entering ministry leadership, Greg spent 11 years in active military service—including time as a Chinook crew chief and mechanic with seven deployments to Afghanistan—following an initial role as a commercial helicopter pilot in Ohio. When he was medically retired at an early age, transitioning away from that active pace proved challenging and humbling. During that season, Greg turned to Scripture to manage anxiety, PTSD, and a sleep disorder. Digging into God's Word naturally inspired him to share it with others and become more involved in the church.
Recently, Greg has been studying the Gospels and Acts. Looking at the early church, he observes that the church is fundamentally a community of people connected to God's Word and to one another, rather than a physical building. As Greg puts it:
"It's more important to teach our kids how to mature into leaders in God's Word—as future parents, teachers, pastors, or church volunteers—than it is to accomplish a more tangible goal like building a bigger facility."
Keeping the Property Intact and the Flock Connected
Greg balances two leadership roles at Risen Savior:
Church Life Director: He oversees property management, safety, and security. From irrigation, HVAC units, and electrical systems to sound equipment and grounds maintenance, Greg makes sure our campus stays in top shape. He enjoys troubleshooting difficult issues and working with volunteer helpers but will bring in trusted companies when urgent repairs are needed. (Right now, he would love a few more volunteers to sign up for lawn maintenance—it’s a great project for a couple or family to tackle together!)
Elder: Greg serves as a spiritual shepherd, building supportive relationships with his assigned flock so they feel comfortable approaching him with questions or prayer requests. Having experienced a season earlier in life where he slipped through the cracks and was away from church for several years, he is passionate about being a helpful, encouraging presence so that no member feels forgotten. He also leads a Bible study every Friday at a senior apartment complex.
Getting in Touch with Greg
For property issues: Text him a photo of the item needing repair or point it out to him in person at church.
For elder or spiritual matters: Call him directly or speak with him in person (or send a text to set up a private time to talk). He loves conversations about Scripture but is also willing to help in other areas such as turning wrenches, rides if your car breaks down, or simply hanging out.
Risen Savior Value
Greg values the welcoming and warm atmosphere at Risen Savior today. "I love that even as we grow, we still feel like a family." Also, he says, "We’re not stagnant—we’re looking forward, continuing to grow, building relationships, and reaching out with the gospel."
