Pontotoc County, we need to have an honest conversation.
Juneteenth is more than just an event—it is a celebration of our history, our resilience, and our presence. But right now, the reality is this: the level of support from our own community has declined, and it is putting the future of our celebration at risk.
Sponsorship participation is low. Vendor sign-ups are down. Fundraising efforts—raffles, t-shirt sales, and other initiatives—have not received the support needed to sustain the kind of celebration our community deserves. The burden continues to fall on a small group of people, and it is no longer enjoyable or even feasible to keep planning large-scale events without broader community involvement.
At the same time, we are witnessing ongoing challenges to Black civil and voting rights across this country. In moments like these, our presence matters more than ever. Showing up, supporting one another, and celebrating our culture publicly is not optional—it is essential. If we do not make ourselves visible and united, we risk losing not only this celebration but also the representation it brings to Pontotoc County.
We should take pride in every opportunity to honor our history and culture. But lately, support has faltered. Procrastination has left this committee in bind after bind, and unfortunately, it has begun to affect how seriously our efforts are taken.
This is a call to action.
If you’ve been meaning to help, now is the time. Become a sponsor. Sign up as a vendor. Support our fundraisers. Purchase a t-shirt. Get involved in any way you can.
And for our leaders both young AND seasoned, male AND female—pageant sign-ups are still open. This is an opportunity to serve as a visible representative of our community, to build confidence, and to stand proudly in who you are and what you represent.
We cannot do this without you. And truthfully, we should not have to.
Let’s come together, show up for one another, and ensure that Juneteenth in Pontotoc County continues—not just this year, but for generations to come.
Thank you all!
