All donations go towards saving lives of the helpless animals of Pontotoc County and the surrounding areas. Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, welcoming environment for animals until adoption, promote spay and neuter, and educate the community on anima

l wellness. Second Chances operates out of private foster homes in Pontotoc, MS. Our fosters are very flexible in setting up appointments for you to meet your future forever friend. I’m on the verge of a panic attack. To be fair, that’s basically how I live my life these days.

Despite being on an intake hold for nearly 10 months, we have STILL accumulated 32 new animals. Yes, you read that right. THIRTY-TWO.

Somehow, I keep convincing myself that adoptions will pick up. I won’t have to ask for help again. But now the new intakes are old enough to reproduce. And honestly, what is the point of me rescuing these animals if I don’t take the proper measures to have them spayed or neutered and make sure we aren’t contributing to the very overpopulation problem we are fighting every single day?

I can put us on an intake hold. I can say no. I can desperately try to stop the revolving door.

But animals keep showing up. They get abandoned. They get dumped. They get left at foster homes. They need somewhere to go, and somehow, they end up with us.

So now we need to do what others should have been doing all along — GET THEM FIXED.

Our current costs are:

🐱 Cat neuters — $60
🐱 Cat spays — $80
🐶 Dog neuters — $125
🐶 Dog spays — $175–$225

Our newest dogs are Floki, Brittany, Tiffany, the Olympians, Russ, Guss, a litter of 6, and a litter of 8.

Our newest cats are Craig, Pawdry Hepburn, and 3 feral females who need TNR.

And thankfully, there are a couple of people who have stepped up to help.

❤️ A VERY special friend has volunteered to pay for an entire litter of puppies.

❤️ MSU has also spayed/neutered 5 animals at no cost to us.

We are incredibly grateful for both.

But that still leaves 19 animals that need to be spayed or neutered.

The total cost to get those 19 animals fixed is approximately $2,730.

And I’m panicking a little. A lot.

Because $2,730 is a LOT of money for a rescue that is already stretched beyond its limits.

I hate asking for money. I REALLY hate asking for money. But I also refuse to rescue animals and then not prevent more unwanted animals from being born.

Spay and neuter IS rescue. Prevention IS rescue.

We have 13k followers - I only need 19 of you to each sponsor an animal. But if that just isn’t an option, every little bit helps!

And if you can’t donate, PLEASE SHARE THIS. Seriously. Sharing can be just as valuable when it gets in front of the right person.

We have 32 new animals that we never planned for.

We have 19 still needing surgeries.

We have a $2,730 goal.

And I have absolutely no intention of letting these animals become part of the cycle I am desperately trying to stop.

It has been a heck of week and I completely forgot to take a few new pics before I left for work this morning, but the lil guys are all doing great! We have progressed to what I call puppy mush - canned puppy food mixed with puppy milk. They’re growing FAST! I will post updated pics later tonight.

We had another new intake test positive for heartworms 😭. Keep your pets on monthly preventions! $30 per month to prevent it is nothing compared to the $800-$1,000 it costs to treat it! Left untreated, heartworms are fatal and a prolonged, terrible way to die.

And completely preventable. Whoever had him before us didn’t have him neutered or on prevention or even fed him regularly.

Sigh.

It has been 18 weeks since our last adoption.

So, we will be having a local adoption event / fundraiser next weekend on the 22nd. Further details to come.

Simone, Katie, and Phelps are still doing great! Katie’s wounds are healing much faster than I anticipated. They’re still deep enough that I’m concerned but I no longer consider her to be in critical condition.

They are getting more sturdy on their feet and have started playing and growling. It brings me so much joy to see them growing.

We have gotten quite a few inquiries regarding their adoption. We are slowly working through them and will respond to each of them as soon as possible 😊.

His little siblings are all doing very well. They’re really good eaters. Milk has gotten so much more expensive than the last time I had to buy it 🙀. I’m hoping to start adding milk-soaked puppy kibble soon to cut down on the cost.

One sister has a few really deep wounds that I’m concerned about but the other two are doing perfectly fine. She is on antibiotics to ward off infection and creams to help with healing so all that is left to do is wait.
