Second Chances Animal Rescue - Pontotoc, MS Second Chances is an animal rescue in Pontotoc, MS dedicated to saving at risk cats and dogs.

Second Chances Animal Rescue of Pontotoc is dedicated to saving the homeless pets of Pontotoc County Mississippi and the surrounding area. All donations go towards saving lives of the helpless animals of Pontotoc County and the surrounding areas. Our goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, welcoming environment for animals until adoption, promote spay and neuter, and educate the community on animal wellness. Second Chances operates out of private foster homes in Pontotoc, MS. Our fosters are very flexible in setting up appointments for you to meet your future forever friend. 🚨 WE NEED YOUR HELP! 🚨

A few weeks ago, I posted about some of our puppies who had the opportunity to be pulled by another rescue. Unfortunately, that plan fell through, and the rescue changed their mind. 🥺💔

But we aren’t giving up on these babies!

We’ve found another rescue willing to step up and help some of them, and we’re incredibly grateful for that opportunity. There’s just one hurdle we need to overcome: TRANSPORTATION COSTS.

It costs $175 per dog to get them where they need to go and give them a chance at a better future.

These puppies deserve a chance. They deserve to grow up knowing safety, love, and a family of their own instead of wondering what tomorrow holds. We have another door open for them, and we desperately want to make it through. 🐾❤️

Those tiny, shaky, old man steps may not look like anything special to most but they’re priceless to this mama!

Lucky B is 16 years old and suffering from a torn ACL. I truly thought it was time to let him go. He struggled to stagger around, constantly fell over (required assistance to get back up), and was generally in a lot of pain - even with pain meds.

But I wasn’t ready for our time to be over. I never am. So I decided to give him one more week. If he didn’t show improvement and continued to decline, I would concede that it was time.

But he has regained so much mobility 😭😭😭. Although very slowly, he is walking around again and is steady on his feet. He occasionally falls over but is able to get himself back up.

Looks like we have a little more time together 🥹🥹🥹.

Well. I really hoped we were beyond any post-op complications. It has been a few months. And he got better. Hasn’t had any issues since about two weeks post-op. Until this situation flared back up.

If you’re unaware, Reynolds lost both of his back legs due to irreparable damage from a skin infection. For a couple of weeks after surgery, he couldn’t keep his p***s retracted. This can lead to injury, pain, discomfort, and quite literally death if he injures it enough to bleed out when no one is home as it drags the floor when he walks around. We discussed some type of corrective surgery but it’s super dangerous, has a low success rate, and could actually cause more damage than it might potentially fix. So that became no longer an option. For whatever reason, the issue resolved itself and I haven’t had any reason to worry about it until about 2 weeks ago.

I’m at a loss about what to do. He rips off every diaper I put on him. The entire diapers scoot with him on the floor and come off basically immediately. The male wrap diapers (Reynolds’ wraps ☠️) are better but he finds the tab and rips them off if they don’t work their way down and off of him on their own. But I can’t just leave him exposed and at risk of injury. I was hoping it would correct itself again 😭😭😭.

In a perfect world, I could come up with a permanent solution. But I’ll have to settle for a temporary one. For now, I have purchased suspenders to keep the Reynolds’ wraps clamped on and from falling down as he scoots. If this doesn’t work, he’ll have to go back to his drag bags. And he HATES them 🥺🥺🥺. But maybe this will work. Maybe.

(I had someone suggest putting donation links at the bottom of every post for day to day operating funds and hopefully avoid some of my emergency situations. She has a point but I worry it will cause some people to unfollow. However, proper animal care for 70 animals is expensive so it is what it is.)

🚨 We could really use some help with our vet bill. 🚨

Our animals have been keeping the vet very busy lately, and unfortunately, the bills are adding up faster than we can keep up with them.

💔 Loki went into acute heart failure.
💔 Kinsley got into a scuffle and has a large wound leg needing attention.
💔 Daisy hurt her foot climbing over the fence but, thankfully, xray shows nothing is broken.
💔 Lucky B has a torn ACL.

We are incredibly grateful to have a veterinarian who has always been so good to us and to the animals in our care. They work with us, help us when things are difficult, and have become a huge part of Second Chances. But even with their kindness and help, X-rays, bloodwork, diagnostic testing, medications, procedures, and surgeries are expensive.

And when you have this many animals needing care at once, those costs pile up quickly. And the bill is getting bigger than our rescue account can handle.

When you’re 16 years old, something is bound to happen. He tore his ACL by going down the stairs too fast. Sigh. Hopeful a few weeks of crate rest and meds will have him on his feet again.
