TeamKate Kate Amato Foundation is dedicated to funding innovative pediatric cancer research.

The TeamKate page was originally created to show love and support to Kate Amato during her fight against cancer between 2014-2016. Through this page, Kate captured hearts all over the world with her beautiful smile and spunky spirit. In 2014, at just 9 years old, Kate was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive soft tissue cancer that attacks skeletal muscles. Despite a long and painful battle with this terrible disease, Kate continually radiated kindness, joy and beauty. We lost Kate to cancer, but her resilient and inspiring spirit lives on through the work of Kate Amato Foundation. During Kate's illness, we learned how severely underfunded research is for childhood cancer, resulting in outdated, highly toxic treatments and low survival rates for children. To honor her life, Kate's foundation is dedicated to finding safer, smarter and more effective treatments for children with cancer by funding innovative research that accelerates the pace of progress and saves young lives. To date, KAF has funded $375,000 in research grants to support groundbreaking research at some of the leading immunotherapy and cancer genomics labs in the country. Our signature fundraising events are The KATE KUP Triples Tennis Tournament and The KATE KLASSIC Golf Tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. We also honor Childhood Cancer Awareness Month each September by delivering care packages to children, parents and healthcare workers fighting cancer through KATE'S KINDNESS PROJECT. We delivered our fourth and final batch of care packages for Kate’s Kindness Project last Friday to Wolfson Children's Hospital. We had the honor of meeting three special : Ella, Jonah and Jack as well as their incredible parents. We also delivered gift baskets to the nurses and child life specialists who were thrilled with their goodies!

At the end of the visit, I ran into Dr. Bradfield who was Kate’s oncologist during her treatment. We hadn’t seen each other since 2016. That hug and conversation were needed because we’re approaching 10 years since losing her. I thanked him for how good he was to Kate, told him she adored him, and how grateful we are that he took such good care of her. He’s a wonderful doctor with a kind and gentle nature. They were a perfect pair. 🩵💙

Throughout Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Kate's Kindness Project has been making special deliveries to local hospitals, sharing support and encouragement with pediatric cancer patients, their families and the healthcare teams who support them every day.

At its heart, this project is about letting families know they are not alone.

Last Friday, volunteers visited UF Health Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville, delivering care packages and spending time with those impacted by childhood cancer.
During this visit, Dr. Duane Mitchell, Director of the University of Florida Health Cancer Institute and a member of the Kate Amato Foundation Scientific Advisory Board, shared why continued investment in pediatric cancer research is critical to advancing new discoveries and better treatments for children battling cancer.

While Kate's Kindness delivers comfort today, our campaign is helping fund the breakthroughs of tomorrow.

Yesterday’s care package delivery was special. This week, we delivered gifts to the outpatient oncology clinic at Nemours Children’s Health in Jacksonville. What I didn’t expect was to receive so many surprises and so much joy in return. The smiles and laughter with an amazing little girl, Saige; the bonding time with her mama; the hugs and tears with a very special nurse who took such loving care of Kate, were all overwhelmingly healing for this mama’s heart.

Saige’s mom told us that Kate’s Kindness care packages were the first gifts they received after diagnosis, and the shirt in the parent package was the only thing she had to wear in the hospital those first few days. She loves Kate and keeps her card on their family’s refrigerator. 🥰

The sparkly woman in the pink sweatshirt is nurse Tori. Kate LOVED Tori with her whole heart. She called Tori a fairy, loved her bracelets and glittery makeup, made presents for her, and looked forward to clinic just so she could see her. 🧚

Saige and I met at the Nemours Christmas party last year and clicked instantly. It was no coincidence that I got to deliver her care package in person, spend an hour with her, and feel little sparkles of Kate’s spirit through her kind and playful personality; it was meant to be. She has stolen my heart. ✨🩵✨

Yesterday’s care package delivery was special. This week, we delivered gifts to the outpatient oncology clinic at Nemours Children’s Health Jacksonville. What I did not expect, was to receive so many surprises and so much joy in return. The smiles and laughter with an amazing little girl, Saige; the bonding time with her mom; the hugs and tears with a very special nurse who took such loving care of Kate, were all overwhelmingly healing for this mama’s heart. After Kate’s Kindness care package delivery at UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital last week, our friend Dr. Duane Mitchell invited the UF Alpha Epsilon Delta students for a tour of the Adam Rosen Neuro-Oncology Lab at the UF Health Cancer Institute. He showed the students the facility, taught them how cancer works and explained the newest technologies developed to treat and cure brain cancers. He has a wonderful way of making complicated information easy to understand!

Dr. Mitchell also explained that funding is critically necessary for pediatric cancer research, emphasizing the importance of nonprofits in supporting innovation and new ideas, which is why he serves on our Scientific Advisory Board.

We are deeply grateful for his time with the students, his commitment to Kate and our mission, and his dedication to cancer research. We also wish to extend our heartfelt congratulations on his new role as Director of the University of Florida Health Cancer Institute. He and his team are changing the way we treat pediatric cancer. 💙🎗️🧡

The story behind the photos. We had just delivered a care package to an adorable little girl, sporting pink jammies and a head wrap. She was in isolation due to compromised immune function which often happens during cancer treatment.

We watched this precious little girl with bright eyes open her gifts through the window; we saw her smiles and heard her mother’s excitement. We made heart shapes with our hands and she wrote “Thank You” on the white board. When her mother expressed her thankfulness through a small crack in the door, she explained how long they’d been in that room and how much these gifts meant. I told her I’ve been in that room with my daughter. She replied with exhausted tears in her eyes, “so you understand.” We both cried and I told her I wish I could wrap my arms around her.

After she closed the door, some of the students were crying, so we paused to process the moment. I explained this is the reality of childhood cancer. Sick children who are isolated, family members who exhausted, treatments that wreak havoc on tiny bodies and last for years, and the emotional drain of it all. I reminded them that a profession in healthcare means taking care of the vulnerable and to stay mindful that kindness and compassion can make an enormous difference in someone’s life. 🩵💙🩵

💙🐊🧡Kate’s Kindness Project, Gator Edition. Yesterday, Kate Amato Foundation partnered with volunteers from UF Alpha Epsilon Delta pre-health professional fraternity to deliver care packages for patients, parents, nurses and therapists at UF Health Shands Children's Hospital in Gainesville. We visited several children, talked with their mothers, and shared our love and encouragement. The students were overwhelmed by the responses of the families, witnessing the children’s smiles and their parents tears of gratitude. That’s what Kate’s Kindness Project is about; reminding these families that we understand what they’re going through, we’re supporting them, and they are not alone. 💙🎗️💙
