Good news from the beach!

Sea turtle nesting season is off to a strong start at the GTM Research Reserve with 87 loggerhead nests documented so far.

Each nest represents a remarkable journey and a reminder of why protecting these beaches matters.

Want to follow the season a little more closely? Our Adopt-a-Nest Program offers a meaningful way to connect with sea turtle conservation at GTM.

Heading to the beach this weekend? Small actions can have a big impact for the wildlife that depends on our coast during nesting season.

As sea turtles and shorebirds nest along Northeast Florida’s beaches this summer, please remember to:

• Give wildlife plenty of space
• Do not interfere with, pick up or otherwise disturb wildlife
• Fill in holes in the sand
• Knock down sandcastles before sunset
• Pack out all trash and fishing line
• Keep lights low at night
• Respect posted nesting areas

If you see injured wildlife or a disturbed nest, contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).

Science looks a little different in the estuary. It’s muddy boots. Salty air. Long days on the water. Data collection powered by a team willing to go wherever the research leads.

Scientists from Villanova University joined GTM Research Reserve staff in the field to study freeze recovery and mangrove dynamics along Northeast Florida’s coast — research helping scientists better understand how changing environmental conditions are shaping coastal ecosystems over time.

Every monitoring trip, field survey and sample collected adds to a larger story about resilience, adaptation and stewardship in the estuary.

The estuary is full of small wonders. 🐝🌼

Pollinators like bees help native plants reproduce by moving pollen from flower to flower — supporting the coastal habitats, wildflowers, and wildlife that depend on them throughout the GTM Research Reserve.

A small but important part of nature’s balance.

ACTION ALERT: Protect National Estuarine Research Reserves 🌿

The Administration’s proposed FY 2027 budget would eliminate funding for the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS) — threatening coastal research, conservation, education, and wildlife protection nationwide.

Together, our voices can go even further.

Out on the Tolomato last Thursday: the GTM Research Reserve science team doing what they do best.

John Dickens and Megan Howkins of GTM Research Reserve were out on a SWMP (System-Wide Monitoring Program) run with support from Silas Tanner of Matanzas Riverkeeper — collecting long-term water-quality data like salinity, dissolved oxygen and water temperature to help scientists track changing conditions in the estuary over time.

From changing tides to changing conditions, these monitoring trips help scientists better understand Northeast Florida’s coastal ecosystems.

Friends of GTM Research Reserve members gathered for an engaging and interactive afternoon of sea turtle science with Scott Eastman of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

From nesting trends and conservation efforts to research happening along our Northeast Florida coast, members got an inside look at the science helping protect these incredible marine species.

Events like Sip & Science are exclusive benefits for Friends of GTM members — creating opportunities to connect with scientists, conservation leaders, and the stories shaping our estuary.

In addition to Sea Turtle Nesting in Northeast Florida, recent topics have explored estuarine fish communities and Florida’s water resources.

Some of Northeast Florida’s most iconic wildlife once faced an uncertain future — and many still need our protection today. 💚

From leatherback sea turtles and manatees to bald eagles and wood storks, these species remind us why conservation matters.

We celebrate Endangered Species Day to recognize the progress made through conservation efforts and the ongoing work needed to protect vulnerable wildlife and the habitats they depend on.

At GTM Research Reserve, that work continues every day through research, education, habitat protection, and stewardship. 🌎

Slow Down. Look Closer. Discover Nature Journaling at GTM 🌿

Nature journaling is more than sketching — it’s a way to slow down, observe closely and connect more deeply with the natural world around us. 🌿

Join Elaine Bergstrom on the first Thursday of every month at GTM Research Reserve for a guided nature journaling walk inspired by mindfulness, curiosity and discovery. Free to attend, but registration is required.

Using words, sketches and observations, participants explore the small wonders of the estuary — from blooming flowers and oyster beds to birds, butterflies and drifting clouds.
