Mickler's Landing Turtle Patrol

Mickler's Landing Turtle Patrol Nest monitoring activities are conducted under FWC Permit # MTP-029.

In partnership with Jacksonville University, we are a team of community volunteers and JU students monitoring sea turtle nests along 4.6 miles of Ponte Vedra Beach and connecting our community to sea turtles and their coastal nesting habitat. 🐒

This morning, our team witnessed a beautiful female returning to the ocean. It was a sight to behold and these views make the early mornings totally worth it!

Sadly, she did not nest, and we received a report from a beachgoer that there was an unleashed dog harassing this female while she was nesting.

Please make sure when visiting the beach you have your dog(s) leashed for the safety of people, turtles, and other wildlife that share the beach.

Just one of our SEVEN (7!) nests from this morning. What a great World Turtle Day for the team 😍 We are now at 27 nests this season with today's number.

These nests are all up for adoption (ahem...Father's Day is coming up πŸ˜‰). Learn more and adopt here: www.micklerslandingturtlepatrol.org/adopt-a-nest

Are you spending time at the beach this weekend? Help protect nesting female sea turtles and hatchlings by:

⛱️πŸͺ‘ Taking all chairs, umbrellas, trash and other belongings off the beach when you leave,

πŸ”¦ 🚫 Avoiding the use of flashlights on the beach at night, and

πŸͺπŸ•³οΈ Filling in all holes and knock down sand castles before you head home.

Thank you 😊🐒

Thank you so, so much to Girl Scout Troop 63211 for raising $1,300 to help protect sea turtles! These young conservationists collected donations, signed petitions to update St. Johns County's lighting ordinance, and continue to advocate for the protection of our sea turtles. They are a wonderfully motivated group of individuals empowering each other and our community to protect the world around us.

They adopted two nests, and we gave them a tour of Jacksonville University's Marine Science Research Institute along with plenty of stickers and ID guides to help identify the species of sea turtles we have nesting on our beach. πŸ˜ƒ

Great job ladies and thank you for all you've done for sea turtles so far. We can't wait to see what's next! 🐒🐒🐒

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms! We welcomed a beautiful Leatherback nest this morning 😁🐒

This is the largest species of turtle in the world, and as with every leatherback crawl we see, we lay across the tracks to show the size. These are massive creatures that can get to be up to ~7 feet wide (including front flippers)! 🐒

Another two nests today bring us to four so far this season. With reports across northeast Florida, the sea turtles are definitely in town! Our 10-year average is 115 nests per season, so there are many more on the horizon. πŸ˜ƒ
