The trees in the DJS orchard continue to grow and have been recently fertilized. This includes guavas, Mexican apples, oranges, tangerines, and bananas. A drip irrigation system was setup to help the fruit trees to take root and grow while they are young, with the expectation that as they become stronger they will be long-term fruit producers for the DJS students and others in the community. It's exciting to see our first batch of bananas starting to ripen!

The Debbie Joy School Library is one of the busiest places on campus, with upper and lower school classes regularly spending time in the library. The students come to read, learn, and support each other while sharing textbooks and storybooks. The older students use the library to prepare for state exams while the younger children love to have the librarian, Madam Esther, read to them. We are working on finding ways to boost the collection and are accepting donations from a wish list on Amazon of award-winning and highly reviewed books. The books will ship to one of our volunteers, Donna, and she’ll carry as many as possible with her to Zambia in June. Our Family Partners Program provides a monthly food and hygiene supply supplement for families with highly vulnerable children attending the Debbie Joy School. Several students have been identified as needing extra support and are awaiting sponsors. In the spotlight today, we recently welcomed a new 9 year old student named Netha who was brought to the school in early March by concerned neighbors. Our Family Partners Manager performed an initial evaluation and found that she faces significant challenges in her everyday life, including the loss of her caregivers, living with a chronic health condition, and minimal opportunities to attend school in the past. Given her circumstances, Netha was identified as an excellent candidate for a full Family Partners sponsorship which would provide a monthly food and hygiene supplement ($40/month) and is now seeking a donor to help her to blossom and thrive. Please DM us if you are interested in sponsoring Netha or another child and we will provide you with information on prospective children.

A new animal husbandry initiative was started last summer - raising rabbits for added protein with the school lunches. The program has been maturing, and in January the school cooks were able to prepare about 20 kilos of rabbit meat to add to the student lunch program. The upper school students specializing in agriculture are able to help with the gardening and are enjoying the opportunity to get involved in animal husbandry with the feeding and butchering of the rabbits.

We are excited to send our first class of DJS Graduates off to college in January! Six members of our 2024 graduating class have been awarded sponsorships from LRPI as they further their education in the fields of nursing, engineering, and heavy machinery. Several of these students have been helping at DJS during their gap year (2025) as they awaited their high school exam scores and applied to colleges, and they plan to continue volunteering during college breaks. We are encouraged by the generosity of several donors who stepped up to support our students and we can’t wait to see how this next leg of their educational journey unfolds.

Hello Friends! We have identified 7 children at the Debbie Joy School in urgent need of family support and we are currently looking for sponsors for each of them at $35 per month. If you are interested in partnering with one of these families, please email Megan ([email protected]).

Our Family Partners Program currently provides support for 14 sponsored families with children in the Debbie Joy School. This sponsorship provides monthly food inputs, as-needed medical support, and occasionally meets other needs such as annual farming inputs and critical housing improvements and/or rent. Our medical screenings conducted for the approximately 350 kids in the the Debbie Joy School revealed that about 20% of our children are extremely malnourished (BMI percentile < 2%). In addition, several of these kids are struggling with medical issues. Based on our findings we have started a breakfast program at school and we are looking to add the most vulnerable children identified and their families to our Family Partners Program.
