Shellback Golf Club We are a "traveling" and SCGA Affiliate Golf Club that plays monthly tournaments throughout Southern California......... The Shellback Golf Club was born.

About Shellback
Shellback Golf Club was formed in 1976 by a small group of laid-off Caltrans workers. They gathered at a tavern in Manhattan Beach, CA, to have a few drinks in either celebration or sorrow. They discussed how they would get together in the future. Someone suggested playing golf and possibly forming a club. The owner of the Shellback Tavern, Steve Petroff, overheard this discussion

and offered to be the sponsor. What’s a Shellback? It is anyone that has crossed the Equator by ship. Fortunately, this is not currently required for membership in our group. In the early days, getting consecutive tee times was not as easy as calling up a golf course and booking in advance. If the group wanted a block of 6 tee times for 24 players, 6 “volunteers” would have to be at the course on a Saturday or Sunday when the clubhouse opened to secure the spots for the following week. In 1983, the club applied for membership in the Southern California Golf Association and has been a member in good standing ever since. Thanks to former members like John Foth and the continuing efforts of officers, we have records for the club from the inaugural year and these are shared with current members at the conclusion of each season. Shellback now boasts a membership of 40 golfers. The club plays at various golf courses throughout Southern California monthly and concludes every season with a 2-day Tournament of Champions which has been held at various locations in California, Arizona, Nevada and Mexico.

This past Saturday, Shellback held its fifth tournament of the season at Yucaipa Valley Golf Club. 28 members joined us on a spectacular day. Couldn’t have asked for more perfect weather. Golf course was in great shape and the greens were rolling. Congrats to our winners in the “A” flight, Mr. Joe Czegledy and in the “B” flight, Mr. Ken Peterson. Next stop will be at Los Serranos in November……⛳️🏌️‍♂️

This past Saturday Shellback played its 8th tournament of the season. 26 members played out at Mountain Meadows. The golf course was in good shape and the greens were a bit tricky. The wind came up early in the afternoon and became an issue. No one from either the “A” or “B” flight broke par. Your winners of their respective flights went to Mr. Funston Smith in the “B” flight and a tie for 1st place in the “A” flight between Mr. Larry Seifert and Mr. Bennie Blanco. Congratulations to all our winners this month. Next month we’ll be out at Diamond Bar Golf Course. Thanks to everyone for coming out!!!

Yesterday, Shellback played its 7th tournament of the season at Indian Canyons Golf Club in Palm Springs. Two years ago we played out here and the course did not disappoint. We played the “South” course. The course was in excellent shape, the best course aesthetically we’ve played all season. With majestic views of the Santa Rosa mountains, water features and undulated greens, this course was a treat. Our respective winners of each flight went to Mr. Chris Salvatore in the “A” flight and Mr. Rich Vista in the “B” flight. Chris shot a gross 84, net 70 and Rich shot a gross 86, net 59. Congrats to all our winners yesterday. Our next tournament will be at Mountain Meadows in January. I’d like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. A late post but just wanted to share with you the results of our November tournament at Yucaipa Valley Golf Club. A nice, brisk day greeted our group and the golf course didn’t disappoint. 19 Shellbsckers and 1 guest competed. On this day, Mr. Tim Miers treated us to his first “hole in one” on hole number 13, his fourth overall, and he didn’t see it go in the hole as the pin placement was tucked in behind a bunker to the far right. When his group went up to the green, they couldn’t initially find the ball until they went to the hole and there it was. Congrats Tim, our first hole in one since Mr. Todd Vineyard made one at Oak Valley GC some years ago. Tim also was the winner of the “A” flight along with Mr. David Monson who won the “B” flight. Congratulations to all our winners on this day. Our next tournament will be out in Palm Springs at Indian Canyon Golf Club on December 14th.

Saturday, Shellback played its fifth tournament of the season out at Los Serranos C.C. We played the “north” course. The golf course was in decent shape but there were a few tee boxes that were topped off due to overseeing. The greens were not overly quick but some you could tell were a little stressed. Our winners, in the “A” flight, our newest member, Mr. Bennie Blanco carded a gross 79, net 69. In the “B” flight, Mr. Rick Schram, shot a gross 84, net 69. Congregations to all the winners and thanks to our members for coming out. Next month we will be out at Yucaipa Golf Club. Quick turnaround as our tournament will be played on the 9th.
