Join the Invertebrate Club of Southern California for an afternoon of invertebrate fun on February 15th (Sunday) from 1:00-3:00 PM at the Santiago Creek ECO Center in ! Learn to pin insects, make native plant seed bombs, enjoy commemorative pancakes, and connect with other members at the seventh anniversary celebration of the ICSC! This is a family-friendly event, please let us know if you are bringing kids.

Please RSVP: https://forms.gle/DLs3aNi7FaqonmWPA

Between the epic sunset/moonset, awesome rocks, perfect weather, beetles, ants, wasps, fishflies, ant lions, mantises, scorpion, grey fox, and of course, moths, our black lighting event for was a huge success! You can check out some of the observations starting to come in on our club project here: https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/the-invertebrate-club-of-southern-california

We had two black light stations and a metal halide setup (thank you , , and Jefree Coal!), and they brought in hundreds of moths and other insects. With ~34 people coming out this also broke the record for our largest event as a club!

A big thank-you to Olivia M. of LA County Parks for making this happen, and to everyone who came out and made the time such a great one! Also a thank-you to Zheng Qu for photos 1, 4, and 5.

Our club had a blast this weekend, running an educational booth at the Bug Fair!
is such a great spot to educate the public about arthropods. From whip scorpions to tarantulas, people were fascinated to see and learn about our critters.

Thank you to Chanda and Paulo for leading the table setup this weekend, and to everyone who stopped by to check out the club!

Arthropolooza was a blast! Over three days at the San Bernardino County Museum and the Victor Valley Museum, we introduced over 3400 people to the wonders of tarantulas, whipspiders, mantises, beetles, isopods, cockroaches, millipedes, galls, and more. A lot of people overcame their fears by touching a giant cave roach or giving a tarantula a high-five, while others learned about how gall wasps hijack a tree's defense system, and even more discovered what our native invertebrates look like for the first time. We also have several new members who joined the club after discovering us at Arthropolooza!

We are super grateful to the SBCM and the VVM for hosting us at this awesome event, and a huge thank-you to everyone who volunteered their time, specimens, and pop-ups to make our booth successful! Looking at you chanda, Olivia Miseroy, paulo, Finley, and Alexis Chamberlain!

In collaboration with LA County Parks and organized by our very own Olivia Miseroy, we visited Alpine Butte Wildlife Sanctuary (next to Lake Los Angeles) to remove trash and look for invertebrates! This neat sanctuary has huge Joshua Trees, cool invert species, and unfortunately more trash than it needs...
The squad, from left to right: Jessiah, Alexis Chamberlain, Meagan Gramatikov, Victoria (LA County Parks), Olivia Miseroy, and Ingrid (LA County Parks).

The weather was beautiful, and over the course of two hours we eliminated two illegal dumping piles and numerous pockets of blow trash with the help of good grabbers and gloves.
The two most interesting pieces of trash I saw were...
A typewriter and...
A cup that was clearly unhappy to be outside.

Between the six of us we picked up 10 big bags of trash, 2 pallets, and an artificial Christmas tree, which all together I estimate to have weighed around 200 pounds.
Olivia lording over the trash.

After a beautiful sunset, we set out to find some bugs! Though it was quite cold, we still managed to find some smaller beetles, spiders, and an interesting hymenopteran. Find photos of some of what I found on iNaturalist here:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?on=2025-03-15&project_id=the-invertebrate-club-of-southern-california&subview=map&user_id=arthroverts&verifiable=any

After fording our way through and then back across several washes full of tumbleweeds (no exaggeration), we left Alpine Butte Wildlife Sanctuary, cold and a bit hungry, but happy to have helped protect the desert and all its incredible lifeforms.

A big thank-you to everyone who came out, and especially to Olivia for setting this up! Hopefully this is the first of many more clean-ups to come.

Thanks,

Jessiah
