Remembering Kenneth "Kenny" J. Bermudez

Yesterday marks one year since we lost our beloved member and friend, Kenny Bermudez. On February 23, 2025, our Post family and community were forever changed.

Kenny was more than just a member of Rockland County Fire Explorer Post 44 — he was a shining example of dedication, kindness, and passion for the fire service. His enthusiasm, laughter, and drive to help others left a mark on all of us that will never fade.

As we reflect on this past year, we honor Kenny’s legacy by continuing to train, serve, and support one another — just as he always did. Though he may no longer be here with us, his spirit lives on in every drill, every community event, and every life we touch.

Rest easy, Kenny. You are deeply missed and will never be forgotten.

Advisor Spotlight: Shawn “Farkas” Farkas

Meet Advisor Shawn “Farkas” Farkas, whose fire service journey has truly come full circle. Shawn’s path began in 2007, when he attended his first Youth Academy. The following year, he officially joined Rockland County Fire Explorer Post 44 in 2008.

After two years of growth and training, Farkas left the Explorers in December 2010 to join the Spring Valley Fire Department, continuing his passion for the fire service. Even while advancing in his own department, he always made time to give back, assisting with multiple Youth Academies and helping guide the next generation of firefighters.

In 2023, Farkas returned to Post 44, this time as an Advisor. His dedication, experience, and approachable mentorship style have made him an incredible role model for our Explorers.

We’re grateful to have Farkas back on the team—continuing to inspire, teach, and support the future of the fire service.

Advisor Spotlight: Michael DiPisa

Meet our newest Advisor, Michael DiPisa!

Michael joined Wayne Hose Co. #1 back in 2007 and has proudly served as Treasurer, Recording Secretary, Vice President, and President. Outside of the firehouse, he’s always been dedicated to youth, coaching baseball & softball with Stony Point Little League and basketball with Haverstraw PAL .

In 2025, Michael brought that same leadership and passion to Rockland County Fire Explorer Post 44. Even as our newest Advisor, he’s already made a big impact — helping us build strong connections with Wayne Hose Co. #1 and the Stony Point Police Department for fundraisers and community events.

We’re grateful to have Michael on our team and can’t wait to see the positive influence he’ll continue to bring to our Explorers!

Advisor Spotlight: Josh Sheridan

Meet Josh Sheridan, a dedicated member of the Suffern Hook & Ladder Company and longtime supporter of Rockland County Fire Explorer Post 44.

Josh’s journey in the fire service began back in 2011, when at just 14 years old, he joined Explorer Post 44. During his time as an Explorer, he built the foundation of skills and leadership that would carry him into the fire service. After “graduating out” at 18, Josh didn’t step away—he chose to give back, continuing his involvement as an Advisor, a role he proudly serves in to this day.

In 2014, Josh officially joined the Suffern Fire Department, where he has now been an active firefighter for 11 years. His dual commitment—to both his fire company and the Explorer Post—shows his passion for mentoring the next generation of firefighters.

We’re grateful to have Josh on our Advisor team, sharing not only his knowledge and experience, but also the same dedication and drive that inspired him as a young Explorer years ago.

Advisor Spotlight: Brandon Bates

Meet Brandon Bates, a dedicated member of the Sloatsburg Fire Department and the Lead Training Advisor for Rockland County Fire Explorer Post 44.

Brandon’s journey began back in the Fall of 2007, when he attended his first Youth Academy. Inspired by the fire service, he went on to become an Explorer himself in November 2007, serving until December 2014, when he officially became an advisor.

Over the years, Brandon has assisted with multiple Youth Academies, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of firefighters. Today, as our Lead Training Advisor, he oversees the training and development of our Explorers, ensuring they gain the skills, confidence, and leadership to succeed both in the fire service and in life.

We’re grateful to have leaders like Brandon who keep the spirit of mentorship and community service alive.
