The 2026 AAC brought together LIUNA’s Apprenticeship Leaders from across the U.S. and Canada to support LIUNA’s convention resolutions and our march to a million members.

While this memorable week was defined by hard work and a united focus to strengthen LIUNA’s apprenticeship program, it also celebrated the pioneering work of Executive Director John LeConche to improve and expand apprenticeship and training.

As the architect of this one-of-a-kind conference, this year marked John’s final AAC before retirement.

Thank you, John, for your leadership and the lasting impact you have had on thousands of Laborers. A career filled with changing lives and promises kept will continue through every instructor, coordinator, and member you’ve helped support.

When LiUNA trains, we rise!

A well-trained Laborers’ workforce means not having to choose between productivity and safety. It means a skilled Laborer helps union contractors bring high quality projects in on time and under budget.

At the LiUNA 27th International Union Convention, one message rings clear: Investing in training strengthens our members, our contractors and our union.

On the job, Laborers always hear “I’ve been doing it this way for 20 years” - the key is knowing the difference between bad habits, cutting corners or experience in doing it safe; OSHA violations are one thing, injury is another. Experience matters but so does training. Keep learning. Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Like every person lost leaving families in grief; like courageous survivors returned to family and friends; like a grateful society who praised selfless and brave first responders; like all tradespeople who worked to remove every trace of evil acts and then rebuilt with hope, resilience, and skill... LiUNA members and Building Trades Sisters and Brothers were there... and united we remained years after fighting for every person whose health was and remains affected by the poisonous debris...

To come back stronger after 9/11 took a united effort by every person and organization involved; So today, like every anniversary of 9/11 we honor the lives lost, the families forever changed, the courage of those who responded and the trained, safe and skilled workforce who rebuilt.

We still remember. We always will.

Labor Day reminds us of our history as well as our path to the future. LiUNA and our union contractors commitment to training means the Laborer’s trade provides the ability to gain skills and learn new tech… we are a craft built on safety, productivity, and adaptation - that’s what it means to be a Laborer and what it means to TrainUp!
This Labor Day, we honor the generations of Laborers who built our foundations and every Laborer training up to carry it forward.

“Train Up! with LiUNA!” means building confidence before getting on the job!.

Training takes you from 0 to 60 with fundamentals and hands-on practice. This means gaining confidence at the training center and then putting what you learned to work 70 stories above New York City. Concrete is just one of the Laborers’ Trade “bread and butter” skill sets and training gets you ready to prepare, place and strengthen a concrete structure.

As Manny puts it, LIUNA Training plays a vital role in every instructor’s professional development by providing the skills they need that set them apart in the construction industry.
