Poland, Maine - Historical Society The Poland Historical Society seeks to preserve and promote an interest in the history of Poland, Maine.

Poland, Maine is a small community in western Maine that was incorporated in 1795. It has been historically celebrated as a resort community. This was particularly true during the period before automobiles became commonplace, when many Boston area residents sought summertime relief from the heat and clamor of city living. Poland’s most famous resort was the luxurious, 350 room Poland Spring House.

The hotel property is the site of the natural spring that gave name to the famed Poland Spring Water.

Things can happen mighty fast sometimes. THANK YOU to the person who has brightened up the front door of our Schoolhouse Museum with this colorful floral arrangement. It's a great entry into our very interesting & welcoming hometown Museum. Come on by and visit us on Wednesdays or at our next Open House on Saturday, June 20th.

We learned today of the passing of William "Bill" Emery Jr of Gray on April 27th. Bill kindly donated his father's World War II medals and photo for display at the Schoolhouse Museum. The pictures of Bill presenting his father's medals to PHS were taken on May 1, 2025. Bill & his wife, Virginia, made several visits to us as we researched the Emery family genealogy. Also, they were fond of country music and each visit included an old tune or two.

Bill's father, William S Emery (1913-1989) served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and received the Purple Heart.

Bill's grandfather was Isaiah Emery (1888-1953). The Emery family members are buried in Highland Cemetery.

Our condolences go out to Virginia and the entire family.
