Mason County Homeless Services will conduct the Annual Point in Time Count of unsheltered homeless individuals on January 24-25, 2024. This count is very important in helping to decide where resources will be allocated to help homeless people in our community.

We are in need of volunteers to assist with the count. All volunteers must be at least 18 years of age. There will be two trainings for those who wish to volunteer to assist. You need only attend one of the two. They will be held at Simms Housing 700 22nd Street, Point Pleasant, WV at 6:00 PM on 1/17/2024 and 1/19/2024. Each training will take less than an hour to complete.

Individuals will need to meet with us to register and to download the counting app that will be used for the count. We hope to see you there.

I have had two phone calls and a visit to my office in the last five days. Apparently, there is a rumor floating about that there is a new shelter on 22nd Street. Let me dispel this myth. Homeless Services (Street Outreach, Rapid Rehousing, and Permanent Supportive Housing) is located at 700 22nd Street. There is no shelter. The Mason County Homeless Shelter closed 6/30/2023. Our Agency CSBG services (Tax Preparation, MRAP, and Utility programs are also located at this address. Please help to communicate this to others in our community.

The Mason County Homeless Shelter has closed permanently effective today, 6/30/2023. We will continue to operate Street Outreach, Rapid Rehousing, and Permanent Supportive Housing from our office at 700 22nd Street, Point Pleasant, WV.

Rumors have been circulated that the WV Homeless Coalition took money from Mason County Homeless Shelter, resulting in its closure. This is not factual. We are still receiving the same grant that we have received for the past twenty years. The grant has not increased in that time, and it is not sufficient to continue operating the shelter. The WV Homeless Coalition is supportive of our new approach to serving Homeless individuals and families through Street Outreach, Rapid Rehousing, and Permanent Supportive Housing.

A Shelter Night Before Christmas

T’was the night before Christmas and all through the shelter,
The staff were all running abroad helter-skelter,
Preparing the place for when Santa would come,
Bringing presents to children to dad and to mum.

The place was all lit from the floor to the ceiling,
With warm lights and ornaments on a tree so appealing,
With a wreath on the door and a welcome for all,
From Felman Productions who provided it all.

The Women’s Club determined to not be out done,
Are bringing in presents. Imagine the fun.
As all are involved in setting the trappings,
The staff through the night are quietly wrapping,
With gifts and with paper from the good Modern Woodmen,
All the good ladies and all of the good men.

The children are tucked in their beds warm and tight,
All cute in their jammies, as we turn out the light.
While they dream of the foods that tomorrow will bring,
From AEP Lakin where good people are king.

And lest we forget those who are still on the street,
Who come to the shelter for the food that they eat.
Out of the cold to a place warm and gladsome,
Through the courtesy of good folk from Amherst-Madison.

And so many others too numerous to guess,
Are helping the shelter, the homeless to bless.
So we wish to say thanks to each good, tender heart,
As we turn out the lights and prepare for the night.

So, we say as the shadows of night slowly fall.
God bless everyone. Merry Christmas to all.

*Thank you from the staff of the Mason County Homeless Shelter.

This Thursday, July 21st, is Stand in the Gap Ministry's 2nd distribution of care packages. These packages contain the items you see in the picture, along with a few others that they will have on hand to add. This is for any individual that would have a need for the items or know someone that would. They want to be a blessing to the community and to get to know anyone who has these needs. They will be on 1st Street in Point Pleasant, under the bridge next to the Farm Service Agency building. They will begin at 5 PM and stay until 7 PM or as long as supplies last. They would like to thank Valley Health, the Mason County Health Department, and Walgreens and others who have donated to make these possible.

Addiction hurts, it hurts those that are addicted, friends and families and it hurts our community as a whole. This is something that cannot be fought alone and not something that a person suffering from addiction can fight alone. It will take a community as this is an epidemic that is sweeping across our communities and our entire nation. It is destroying our family structure, overloading our justice system and tearing down our community. One may think this could never affect them but this is something one cannot know. It could be a friend a brother a sister a mother and often for reasons we have not been able to understand. But, we can understand! It is time to speak up and speak out, to educate ourselves and others how we can support one another and together make readily available resources and information to better understand how we can play a role in regaining lives.

Please join us, Saturday May 21, 2022 in our awareness walk being held in memory of loved ones lost due to addiction as well as to celebrate those in the recovery process. We will be meeting on the upper parking lot (stage area) in Pomeroy.

Our guest speakers will provide information on how addiction affects the brain, and the impact it has on people suffering from addiction, our families, friends and our community as well as to offer insights into what our community is doing thus, so far. They will be sharing resources, as well as to speak on behalf of recovery process and healing. Many agencies will be available to offer pamphlets with information on how they are helping fight addiction and the services they have available.

We will be begin a candlelight Vigil at 7pm in recognition of those in recovery as well as in memory of loved ones that have been lost due to addiction. Following, we will walk the path along the river lined with memorial pictures and pictures in celebration of those in the recovery process.

If you have a loved one lost due to addiction or you are in recovery and would like to have a picture included in the services (must have permission from the family for memorial pictures), please contact us through the “Lost Voices of Meigs and Mason county” page or contact Brenda Phalin at ……… All pictures and information must be received by May 7th to allow us the time to laminate and prepare them the services.
