Point Beach Shade Tree Commission announces its fall free street tree program
The Point Pleasant Beach Shade Tree Commission is offering a limited number of free street trees to property owners for fall planting.
This program aims to increase street trees throughout the town. For streets with curb planting areas less than three feet wide or locations without sidewalks, the commission can plant front or side yard trees, preferably within the first 10 feet from the street.
The Shade Tree Commission will evaluate each property to determine its suitability. Because of the size of the trees planted, owners must be able to water them using a hose and gator bag for the first two summers. Watering assistance can be arranged for property owners who need it.
Property owners can choose from a selection of site-appropriate trees, with an emphasis on native species. Typically, the trees will be 8 to 12 feet tall at the time of planting. "Street or front yard trees will enhance property values and appearance, while providing many environmental benefits," noted Mary Ellin Mallazzo, the program manager.
To be considered for a fall planting, requests must be received by September 10th. Please include your name, address, email, phone number, and whether you prefer a street or a front yard tree. Commission members will follow-up with you on your request.
