What a beautiful June day at Thunder Ridge Preserve! ☀️

Stewardship staff and volunteers recently visited our 200-acre preserve to check in on it and tally the flora and fauna they saw — from beetles to butterflies to wildflowers.

You can visit this special place, too! Learn more on our website: https://sagebrushlandtrust.org/cause/thunder-ridge/

Thank you to our 2026 Artist in Residence, MGArnold Art, for leading a nature journaling workshop and fundraiser last weekend! 🎨

Participants created beautiful journal pages, took home art kits, and supported the conservation of local open spaces along the way.

Many thanks to the Idaho Museum of Natural History for hosting us! 🦬

Thank you to everyone who recently joined us for the annual amphibian survey at our 920-acre Kackley Ranch! 🐸

Volunteers documented several amphibian species, including the Western Tiger Salamander, Boreal Chorus Frog, and Northern Leopard Frog (a species of greatest conservation need).

The Northern Leopard Frog “is a species that’s having trouble, so the fact that they’re still present and appearing to be doing relatively well in Southeast Idaho is important to follow,” said Chuck Peterson, a herpetologist and emeritus professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Idaho State University.

Peterson said amphibians are indicator species, helping scientists understand the broader impacts of climate change, drought, wildfire, invasive species, habitat loss, disease, pollution, and habitat fragmentation. They’re also a “really important link in the food chain.”

Thank you to everyone who helps make this important conservation work possible!

🌻🪻🪴 Exciting news!

We're partnering with the Portneuf Pollinator Partnership to bring a native plant sale to our community!

By planting native species, you can help support pollinators, boost biodiversity, and create healthier habitat right in your own backyard. 🐝🦋🌿

Our stewardship team recently installed a wildlife-friendly fence at our Thunder Ridge Preserve to help prevent unauthorized motorized use on the property.

We wanted to protect the preserve while still allowing wildlife to move freely across the landscape. Wildlife-friendly fencing helped us achieve that balance!

The best classroom really is the great outdoors!

Earlier this week, we hosted 8th and 9th grade students from The Sage School for two days of hands-on field trips and exploration.

We visited Edson Fichter Nature Area, Century Heights Preserve, and Sacajawea Park Pollinator Garden, where students:

🐦 Went birding
📓 Practiced nature journaling
🌼 Learned about pollinators
🌎 Explored land conservation and the role of land trusts
🧤 Helped with service projects along the way

We loved getting to share our community's special outdoor spaces with the next generation.

Huge thanks to Master Naturalists Sarah Jackson, Linda Popelka, and Kitty McCoy for sharing their knowledge and helping make these experiences so meaningful for students.

We’re also grateful to our partners — Idaho Master Naturalists (High Desert Chapter), Portneuf Pollinator Partnership, Idaho Fish and Game Southeast Region, and National Audubon Society — for providing educational support and / or learning materials.

Want to bring your students on a field trip with us? Reach out anytime! Email [email protected] for more information.

We’re excited to share some leadership updates from the Sagebrush Steppe Land Trust board of directors!

Last month, the board elected:
• Nancy Armstrong as Board President
• Dave Doran as Vice President

Nancy, who previously served as the board's vice president, brings a deep commitment to conservation as a local landowner who has protected her property with a conservation easement. Dave recently joined the board and brings a lifelong passion for Idaho’s open spaces, along with experience in nonprofit management, fundraising, and coalition building.

We also want to extend our sincere thanks to outgoing President Mark Gamblin for his dedicated service. We’re grateful for his leadership and are pleased that he will continue supporting the organization in his new role as past president.

Please join us in welcoming Nancy and Dave to their new leadership roles!
