In May 1965, gay rights activists protested outside the White House in opposition to the less-than-honorable discharges issued to thousands of service members solely because they were q***r.

Forcing LGBTQ people out of the Armed Forces is one of the many tactics from an era known as the Lavender Scare, when q***r people were pushed out of government jobs by the thousands in the mid-1900s.

Take a deeper dive into this history and how President Trump is using that same playbook at aclu.org/lavender-scare_

U.S. Senator Jim Risch (R-Idaho) has consistently opposed LGBTQ+ rights and same-sex marriage throughout his career. His views, which he describes as aligning with traditional family values and conservative Idahoan perspectives, have been demonstrated through the following legislative actions and stances: Same-Sex Marriage: Senator Risch voted against the federal Respect for Marriage Act in 2022, which codified federal recognition of same-sex marriages. He has maintained a historical commitment to the Defense of Marriage Act and stated he would support a constitutional amendment defining marriage exclusively as a union between one man and one woman. Workplace Protections: He voted against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) in 2013, which would have prohibited discrimination against employees based on sexual orientation and gender identity. He argued this was a states' rights issue and that the bill made insufficient provisions for employers' religious liberties. Transgender Rights: Senator Risch has strongly opposed policies regarding gender transition care for minors. He introduced the "End Taxpayer Funding of Gender Experimentation Act" to block federal dollars from paying for gender transition procedures, as well as legislation to ban Federal Employee Health Benefits plans from covering gender transitions for minors.
