UI Extension 4-H Bannock County 4-H is a national youth development program designed for youth ages 8-18. We also offer a Cloverbud program for youth ages 5-7.

More than 6.5 million young people across America make friends and have fun while learning leadership, citizenship and life skills through 4-H programs.

4-H activities focus on healthy living, citizenship and science, engineering and technology. Youth in Bannock County can become a member of a 4-H club, attend the Alpine 4-H camp and participate in a project camp or in after-school 4-H programs.

Project Spotlight Saturday 🪡Let's talk sewing!

This week we're featuring Clothing, Textiles & Design - one of Idaho 4-H's most creative projects, and it's way more than just sewing for fun.

In this project, members learn:
🧵Sewing skills - from hand stitching to using a machine, and everything in between
👚 Design & construction - choosing patterns, fabrics, and creating garments that fit and flatter
💡Fashion sense - understanding color, style, and what makes an outfit work
💰Smart shopping - budgeting for fabric, comparing quality, and making wise purchases
♻ Upcycling - turning old clothes into something new and one-of-a-kind

And the fun part? Members get to show off their work, from simple projects like pillows and tote bags to full garments, on the fashion runway at the fair.

Skill Building Friday 🛠 Let's learn something new together!

One of the best parts of 4-H is that every project teaches real, lifelong skills. This week, let's focus on one you'll use for years to come:
📓Record Keeping.

Keeping good records isn't just about filling out a book; it teaches:
✅Organization - tracking expenses, income, and progress
✅Goal setting - seeing how far you've come
✅Responsibility - owning your project from start to finish
✅Financial literacy - understanding costs, profit, and value

Try this week: write down one thing you did for your project each day. It doesn't have to be fancy; a few notes go a long way when fair season rolls around and you need to turn in your record book.

In 4-H, we believe passion is a great teacher. When you love a project, whether it's raising an animal, building a robot, or perfecting a recipe, the learning comes naturally. That's what "learn by doing" is all about.

October is right around the corner, and with it, a brand-new 4-H year. That means fresh starts, new projects, and a whole season of learning by doing.

Before the year kicks off, ask yourself:

🌟What's one goal I want to reach by fair season?

Project Spotlight of the week!
🍫 Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth with 4-H! 🍫

Did you know that making chocolate treats can be a science experiment? 🔬🍪

The 4-H Food & Cooking: Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth – The Science of Chocolate project gives youth the chance to explore the science behind chocolate while creating delicious confections along the way!

Through this project, 4-H members can:

🍫 Learn how chocolate works and why it behaves the way it does
🧪 Conduct hands-on chocolate and research & development experiments
🔍 Explore the science behind their favorite sweet treats
📝 Record their observations and reflect on what they discover
🎤 Share what they've learned through an oral presentation
Youth complete multiple chocolate experiments throughout the year, including at least one Science of Chocolate experiment and one Research & Development experiment. They also maintain a project record book and involvement report.

And when fair time comes, members can show off their hard work by exhibiting a chocolate confection they've prepared or creating a display demonstrating their completed experiments. 🍬🏆

In 4-H, things don’t always go exactly as planned—and that’s okay! Learning how to think through a problem, try a different approach, and find a solution is a skill that lasts a lifetime.

💡 Try the 4-H Problem-Solving Process:

🤔 Identify the problem.
💭 Think of possible solutions.
⚖️ Choose the best option.
🚀 Give it a try.
🔄 If it doesn’t work, learn from it and try again!
🍀 Remember: Sometimes the best lessons come from the problems we have to solve.
