Psi Chi Conference 2019...better late than never.

Our 2019 conference celebrated diversity with a keynote speaker on cultural psychology and hosting of I Am Psyched!, a "multimedia initiative that explores the history and contemporary contributions of women of color in psychology". Special thanks to Shelby Weber for bringing the exhibit to ISU!

Next Saturday (Aprill 22nd) is the Pocatello March for Science, which Psi Chi has been cooperating with. The march starts at 10 am at Frazier Hall, located on the the corner of 5th Ave and Carter. After the march at noon there will be a science expo at noon in the Wood River/Little Wood River rooms in the ISU Student Union Building. The expo will have public demonstrations for the public.

The march's goal is to raise awareness of the importance and contributions of science in the community. Individuals from the many disciplines of the sciences will be present, including Dr. Erin Rasmussen from our very own discipline of psychology, who will be speaking before the march specifically about the contributions psychology has done. I encourage everyone who is free to come and participate in the march.

If you are interested more in what the march is hoping to represent, here is our local mission state:

The purpose of the March for Science- Pocatello is to raise awareness and champion the contributions of all scientists (in education, research, health care, technology, food and agriculture, energy, and natural resources) to the well-being and economic prosperity of the region. Nationally, the March for Science supports robustly funded and publicly communicated science as a pillar of human freedom and prosperity. We unite as a diverse, nonpartisan group to call for science that upholds the common good, and for political leaders and policymakers to enact evidence-based policies in the public interest.

Leadership Opportunity!

We are now accepting nominations for officer positions for 2017-2018. Nominations will need to be submitted to our email address ([email protected]). We will accept for self-nominations, which will need to be in by Friday, April 21st. The voting process will be done through an online, anonymous survey that will be open from Saturday, April 22nd to Friday, April 28th.

Positions open for nomination include:

President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Graduate Mentor(s)

Additional positions, such as Promotions officer, Fundraising officer, Community Service Coordinator, and Social Media Coordinator, can also be added.

Anyone who is interested in president should also send a little statement of what they what direction they would like to take Psi Chi in and what leadership experience they have had in the past, if any (though prior leadership experience is not necessarily needed). These statements will be made available during the voting process. Next semester will be a busy year for Psi Chi. In the fall, in addition to inductions, Psi Chi will be putting on its undergraduate research conference. Though Psi Chi has the money, work on preparing for the conference will likely need to start during the summer. Please keep this is mind when considering a nomination for president. I will continue to be involved with our chapter next year to show the new president the ropes as well, so you won’t be going at it alone.

While membership in Psi Chi distinguishes you from many psychology students, there are still over 600,000 Psi Chi members that you still need to distinguish yourself from. One way to do so is by taking on an officer position. Furthermore, as an officer you will be able to build a strong relationship with our faculty advisor, Dr. Xu, as well as other faculty members. These relationships will prove to be invaluable as students wishing to enter a graduate school program.

If you have any questions, please do not be afraid to message us here or send us an email at [email protected]
