We had a great time last Saturday at the Shining Sea Bikeway 50th Anniversary Jubilee. It was really encouraging to hear about the hurdles the Friends of the Shining Sea Bikeway had to overcome in order to make this treasure a reality!

It was also great to spend some time with DCR Commissioner Mayor Nicole LaChapelle! Thank you for your support!

We appreciate those of you willing to brave the weather and make it to the event!

We will join our friends in Falmouth on Saturday May 30th to celebrate the Shining Sea Bikeway 50th Anniversary. Please stop by our table to say "Hi", show your support for extending the trail to the Canal and fill out a postcard to send to Governor Healey.

Friends of Falmouth Bikeways, our partners in the effort to extend the Shining Sea Bikeway with the Bourne Rail Trail, is holding its annual meeting, this Wednesday, May 13th, from 5-7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Hermann Room in the Falmouth library, 300 Main Street, and will begin with a talk by Craig Della Penna. Craig has lectured extensively on rail to trail conversions and is currently working on a project from Northampton to Boston called the Mass Central Rail Trail. There will also be an update on programs the FFB is working on and light refreshments will be served.

We had so much fun at Falmouth's Shining Sea Bikeway Day we're planning to join the Falmouth Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee for their annual Bike Breakfast on May 5th, from 7-9 a.m. near the Falmouth Depot Station. It will be Cinco de Mayo themed with some breakfast burritos, Mexican wedding cookies, plus coffee/tea, juice and other breakfast treats. Walkers welcome too!

The Cape Cod Commission will also have a table offering a great opportunity to give your feedback about Vision 88 and your desire to extend the trail from North Falmouth to the Canal.

As the state moves forward with the Cape Cod bridges replacement project, we urge MassDOT and regional leadership to consider non-car transportation in the design—for future transportation needs and to alleviate the disruptions that construction will cause in our community.

With the Sagamore and Bourne Bridge replacements, access to Canal crossings and the Cape Cod Canal bike paths will be disrupted for years. Extending the Shining Sea Bikeway to the Canal would provide a resilient north–south route on the Upper Cape during that time — helping residents move around locally and helping businesses stay accessible even during major infrastructure disruptions.

If we start now, this multimodal path could be completed by the time construction starts on the Bourne Bridge!

We respectfully ask MassDOT to begin planning and design for a rail-to-trail extension of the Shining Sea Bikeway.
