Some Hometown Pride members put up new artwork on the south side of On Point Dance Studio last week! This mural used to be on the west shelter house at Elbert Park, but luckily had been stored for the winter and survived the fire late last year. It has a new home on Main Street during the warmer months!

We want to give a big thanks to the Pocahontas Women’s Club for supporting our new patio seating area that will be installed soon at Heritage Park in front of the new mural! They generously gave $500 to support this project. We are so grateful that community organizations can work together to make projects happen in our small town!

Two classes of PAC May Term students teamed with the Pocahontas Pride group to participate in the state-wide Keep Iowa Beautiful annual "Pick Up Iowa" activities. This occurred on May 28, 2025. The Pocahontas Community Area School District and the City of Pocahontas furnished safety vests, gloves, and bags. There were two middle school groups, each with 17 students who worked in the morning (9:00-11:00am) and a second shift worked in the afternoon (1:00 - 2:30pm). The 34 students, two teachers (Megan Bensen and DJ Schnell) and four members of the Pocahontas Hometown Pride group (Dick Gruber, Bonnnie Wood, Corinne Peterson, and Helen Beneke) cleaned the following areas: north on 225 Street (north from the court house), with one group who went east on airport road and south on 230th Street to Princess Park and the other group went west on airport road and south on highway #4. The afternoon group went west and east of highway #3 cleaning the roadsides. Elbert Park and Princess Park were also cleaned.

Thanks to Megan Benson & DJ Schnell for organizing and supervising this day- long volunteer activity. The Hometown Pride members appreciate the work completed by the two sections of May Term students.

We are SO EXCITED about the new mural that finished up this weekend at Heritage Park! Anyone who knows Pocahontas knows that Heritage Park is a gathering space for multiple events throughout the summer. This mural is a very exciting addition!

Pocahontas Hometown Pride Committee will be installing a handicap accessible seating area in front of the mural within the next month thanks to a grant from the Pocahontas County Foundation and local partnership funding. We will host a dedication ceremony for these new additions on Friday, July 18th at 5:30 as part of the 155th Celebration! During this time we will also open the time capsule and put some new items back in. Mark your calendars for this fun, historic event and plan to stay for the Corn on the Cob eating contest after!

Be sure to tag us in any pictures you take with friends and family in front of it!

Looking to get involved in the community? Come to our next Pocahontas Hometown Pride meeting tonight at 5 PM at the Pocahontas Library Meeting Room! We will be discussing our grant application for the Pocahontas County Foundation Grant as well as other projects we plan to tackle next year in the community.
