• Collect and maintain research materials relating to the history, culture and genealogy of the Pilgrims and their descendants housed in the Mayflower Library facility located on the grounds of The Mayflower Society House property, which is open to genealogists, historians and other researchers;

• Publish historical and genealogical research by professional genealogists and historians to establish authoritative biographical, genealogical and historical information relating to the Pilgrims and their descendants;

• Actively participate throughout the world in local community planning and coordination with other nonprofit organizations which have similar missions and goals;

• Provide active participation with state society membership organizations, established in accordance with GSMD standards, and with the approval of GSMD. Each chapter shares the mission and vision of GSMD and membership is limited to individuals who can establish direct lineal descent from a Mayflower passenger in accordance with standards and procedures established and administered by GSMD;

• Solicit financial support of donors;

• Enhance public awareness and support through educational publications, programs, historic tours, logo sales, scholarships, and initiatives to encourage GSMD chapters in similar efforts;

MONDAY MORNING GENEALOGY HUMOR!

Good morning!

I hope you’ve had a chance to see the two videos and written post from my STARVING TIME series so far. It is a tough subject, but so important to understand the events of the earliest days in Plymouth Colony. This week, we’ll take a step away and enjoy the legendary romance of our amazing ancestors over Valentine's Day week, before returning to complete that brutal first winter in Plymouth Colony.

But first, I always like to start our week with a smile and some Monday morning genealogy humor. I hope you take this good humor with you everywhere you go. Positive vibes and smiles - YOU make a difference in the world!

In late August of 1635 a hurricane swept through New England causing great damage to the region.

In "Of Plymouth Plantation" William Bradford mentioned the storm and its impact on Plymouth. According to Bradford the storm "began in the morning a little before day, and grew not by degrees but came with violence in the beginning, to the great amazement of many." The storm continued for 5 or 6 hours and "blew down sundry houses and uncovered others." Bradford also noted that the seas swelled, "Divers vessels were lost at sea." and the winds "blew down many hundred thousands of trees." He concluded by stating that "The signs and marks of it [the storm] will remain this hundred years in these parts where it was sorest."
