Recently, our Executive Director, Viki Brown, had the opportunity to speak about traumatic loss at the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) Youth Worker Café in LaPorte.

Education and community outreach are an important part of our mission, and Viki is passionate about helping others better understand grief, its impact, and how we can support those navigating loss.

From delivering keynote addresses at conferences and community events to guest speaking at universities and leading professional development sessions, public speaking is a significant part of Viki’s role at Dustin’s Place.

Through her experience working with grieving children and families, Viki brings a combination of professional knowledge, real-life experiences, and compassion to every audience.

Today, the Dustin’s Place team came together for our Fall Staff Retreat!

While our mission is centered on supporting children and families navigating grief, we also recognize the importance of taking care of the people who make that mission possible.

Thanks to a grant through the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI), our team spent time with trainer Connie exploring workplace culture, wellness, and the importance of building a healthy, supportive work environment. A major focus of the day was also on self-care, recognizing that supporting others through grief requires us to be intentional about caring for our own emotional and mental well-being.

At Dustin’s Place, we believe that when we invest in our staff and prioritize their well-being, we strengthen our ability to serve the children and families who depend on us.

We had so much fun at the Bowen Health Trunk or Treat this weekend! 🎃💙

But for us, events like these are about so much more than having fun.

Why do we make it a priority to show up at community events?

Because you never know who you might meet.

There could be a child, a parent, or an entire family walking through grief who doesn’t know that Dustin’s Place exists. A family who may be struggling in silence, unaware that there is a community ready to support them.

Sometimes, all it takes is one conversation to help someone realize they don’t have to face grief alone.

That’s why we’re so grateful for community partners like Bowen Health, who help us connect with families and spread the word about the support available.

Don’t Forget About Volunteer Training This Tuesday!

We’re growing in South Bend, and we need more caring volunteers to help support grieving families.

Our next training is this Tuesday, October 13. Volunteers must attend both training sessions, with the second session on October 17.

You don’t need to be a grief expert, just willing to listen, learn, and show up.

Earlier this year, we shared some incredible news: Dustin’s Place is now able to offer one-on-one grief counseling at no cost.

This is a resource we do not want anyone in our community to miss.

Grief looks different for everyone. Sometimes a support group is exactly what someone needs. Other times, having a private space to sit with a counselor, talk through what you’re carrying and receive individual support can make all the difference.

Our one-on-one grief counseling is available for people of all ages, and right now we have appointments available.

Resources like this can only continue when the community knows they exist and feels comfortable using them. So if you’ve been thinking about reaching out—or you know someone who may benefit—please help us make sure these openings reach the people who need them.

There is no cost. No pressure. Just support when you need it.
