The title Companion originates from the Latin com panis, meaning "with bread." Rooted in military history, it originally described "messmates"—soldiers who shared their rations in the barracks and their lives on the battlefield. This relationship represents a level of loyalty and mutual defense that goes beyond standard friendship; it is a bond where lives depend on one another.
In the Royal Arch, this connection is elevated further. Because the Royal Arch brings us into a closer relationship with the Almighty than the Craft alone, the ties between us are similarly strengthened. The term "Brother" is foundational, but "Companion" signifies a completion of that journey and a deeper spiritual intimacy. It is a sacred bond we should carry with immense pride.
