Learn more about Michigan q***r history, free documentary in Ferndale!

Come sit with a piece of Michigan q***r history. đź’ś

Next week, Affirmations is hosting a free Ferndale Pride documentary screening of America You Kill Me, a film about Jeffrey Montgomery, the Michigan gay rights activist whose work still echoes through our community today.

Jeffrey’s activism began after the 1984 murder of his partner, Michael, and grew into decades of anti-violence advocacy, community organizing, and persistent work to make LGBTQ+ people safer in Michigan.

After the screening, stay for a talkback with Affirmations Executive Director Tracy Hall.

This is local history. Our history. And it’s one of those evenings that feels important to be in the room for.

Tuesday, May 26
6 PM
Affirmations
290 W Nine Mile, Ferndale

Presented as part of Ferndale Pride.

Free to attend, but registration is encouraged. Link in bio. đź’śđź’ś

A huge new survey by the Trevor Project shows that anti-trans laws and debates cause stress and anxiety to LGBTQ+ young people. The good news is we as a community can protect them:

Joanna Whaley is a candidate for the State House from Downriver, who shared her story of conversion therapy and her candidacy with our chapter last year. She's a gracious person and a kind human. We deplore this transphobic political attack and the threats she has received.

“While my opponent obsesses over my gender and uses cowardly tricks to try to avoid facing me, I will continue to fight for practical solutions to problems that actually impact our communities.”

“We fought the Trump administration and won,” said Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal, a Democrat who helped organize a protest Pride flag raising at the monument after the government-authorized banner was removed.

The Trump administration has agreed to keep flying a rainbow Pride flag on a federal flagpole at the Stonewall National Monument, reversing course after removing the banner in February.

Trans people have always existed: Aleshia Brevard, who transitioned in 1962, was a successful movie and television actress in the 1970s and 1980s:

In 2018, Nicole Maines became the first trans person to play an explicitly transgender superhero on television. Fifty years prior, another trans femme quietly took on a role on the opposite side of the coin.
