Marian Anderson, Contralto: “Seventy-five years ago, on April 9, 1939, as Hitler's troops advanced in Europe and the Depression took its toll in the U.S., one of the most important musical events of the 20th century took place on the National Mall in Washington. There, just two performers, a singer and a pianist, made musical — and social — history. At 42, contralto Marian Anderson was famous in Europe and the U.S., but she had never faced such an enormous crowd. There were 75,000 people in the audience that day, and she was terrified. Later, she wrote: "I could not run away from this situation. If I had anything to offer, I would have to do so now."”- Susan Stamberg, NPR Morning Edition 2014

Leslie Mason, spinto soprano, has been described as having a voice that hits you like a canon yet she also has the ability to sing soft, beautiful and every hue in between an instant later. Leslie is based in Detroit and regularly appears with the company Opera MODO, where she performed the title role in La Gioconda. “Mason is sublime in the title role. She varies her vocals across a spectrum of emotions, and her belts lifted me out of my seat in a most wonderful way. Her final moments in Act 4 with the lecherous Barnaba is the stuff of opera you do not forget” – David Kiley of Encore Michigan.
Ms. Mason has also performed Miss Jessel in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Lady Billows in Albert Herring and Micaela in Carmen with Opera MODO. Other favorite roles include the title role of Puccini’s Tosca and Leonora in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino.
Leslie has appeared on stages around the world including concerts in Graz, Austria, Carnegie Hall, Detroit Institute of the Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Michigan Opera Theatre, Detroit Boxing Club, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp Faculty Recital Series, and has appeared in recital in various metropolitan churches in Detroit just to name a few.
Ms. Mason holds a Masters of Music in vocal performance from Bowling Green State University where she was granted a full tuition fellowship as a young artist with Toledo Opera. She received a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance from Eastern Michigan University where she received the prestigious undergraduate symposium award.
Ms. Mason holds a certificate from the world renowned American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria where she was one of the youngest students to win a spot in their opera program in her year of attendance. Leslie has also won first prize and audience choice awards two years in a row in Opera MODO’s Detroit Aria Competition.
In addition to her regular performance schedule, Ms. Mason currently sings with Fort Street Church in Detroit, Opera lite, Greenfield Village and participates in recitals all over Michigan. Ms. Mason also performs classic jazz with her husband Jesse. They have four children who, according to Jesse, “have their mother’s pipes.” Ms. Mason is a private voice instructor of nearly 30 wonderful students and has also enjoyed spending the past 12 summers on the voice faculty at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp teaching young students about singing, opera, jazz and music theory.
