When pianist Jeffrey Biegel approached Peter Boyer about composing a new work to be performed alongside Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, Boyer admits he hesitated.
How could any new piece stand beside such an icon?

Thankfully, he accepted the challenge.

The result is Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue, a powerful new work celebrating America's optimism, energy, and spirit. Today it's being performed nationwide as part of Jeffrey Biegel's unprecedented 50-state initiative.

A Grammy-winning pianist and one of today's leading champions of new American music, Jeffrey has commissioned more than 30 new works and launched the groundbreaking Rhapsody National Initiative, bringing Peter Boyer's Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue to audiences across all 50 states.
His own story is just as inspiring.

As a young child, Jeffrey could barely hear and experienced only vibrations before corrective surgery restored his hearing. Today, he performs on the world's great stages, sharing music that once existed only as vibrations.

We're honored to welcome him to Michigan Philharmonic for Opening Night.

Behind the Score:
Opening Night begins with Aaron Copland's Outdoor Overture.

Originally written in 1938 for a New York high school orchestra, Copland created this work to inspire young musicians as part of a campaign celebrating American music.
Its optimism, bold rhythms, and unmistakable sound have made it an American classic for nearly 90 years.
