We would like to pause and remember the girls of the Powell Squib factory disaster of February 1889 . Hettie Jones , Maggie Lynch , Ruth and Esther Powell , Katie Jones , Mary Lake , Jane Ann Thomas , Gladys Reese , Maggie Richards , Mary Walters , forman George Reese , and also Minnie Picton who perished in a explosion in 1909 .
Drillers drilled bore holes in the wall of the chamber of the mine , the fireman placed several sticks of dynamite in the bore hole with no fuse . To set them off a squib which is made of tube like paper filled with black powder would be lit and shoot down the bore hole like a bottle rocket , striking the dynamite setting off the blast .
These were made by young girls at the Powell Squib factory Harris St Plymouth.
The above girls perished when an accidental explosion was set off leveling the factory.
