With only 31 days to go until Election Day, our AFTPA locals NFT1417 and Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT Local 3) and AFTPA staff were out canvassing all over Bucks County and Harrisburg! While NFT1417 Vice President Suzi Drake was out in Bucks County, she came across a rally in support of Josh Shapiro and got to see AFTPA-endorsed candidates Bob Harvie for Congress and Kristin Egan for PA!

Meanwhile, AFTPA Director of Government and Political Affairs Jeff Coyne was out canvassing in Harrisburg for Gov. Shapiro and Sara Agerton.

It’s fitting that today is World Smile Day because President Coleman, AFT President Randi Weingarten, and AFT Vice Presidents Jeff Freitas, Jessica Tang, and Stacy Davis Gates were greeted with smiles (and smiley rocks) during their visit to one of the 11 branch kindergartens in District 8 in Budapest. The kindergarten, which is a part of the Józsefvárosi Óvodák municipal network, provides childcare services for a disadvantaged community. They were joined on their visit by Dr. Gábor Erőss, the Deputy Mayor and Municipal Councilor for Public Education in Józsefvárosi, and the President of Pedagógusok Demokratikus Szakszervezete (PDSZ) or Democratic Union of Teachers, Erzsébet Nagy.

Today, President Coleman also attended the Budapest Forum, which focused on building sustainable democracies and address the most pressing challenges in democratic countries today. Earlier today, President Coleman, AFT President Randi Weingarten, and AFT Vice Presidents Jeffrey Freitas, Stacy Davis Gates, and Jessica Tang met with the Hungarian Minister of Education, Judit Lannert. They were also joined by the President of Pedagógusok Demokratikus Szakszervezete (PDSZ) or Democratic Union of Teachers, Erzsébet Nagy. During the meeting, President Coleman had the opportunity to share about AFTPA’s recent voter registration drives and moving civic education into practical efforts. She spoke to the importance of having young people involved in the resistance movement as well as taking that next step to ensure that they also register to vote and participate in our elections. This is how the change we seek can actually be achieved and laws can be passed.

Today, the Trump Administration released the regulations for its national private voucher scheme, which would divert billions of taxpayer dollars away from public schools. In Pennsylvania, public schools serve over 86 percent of our students —schools that welcome all children and remain the heart of our communities.

President Coleman, AFT President Randi Weingarten, and AFT Vice Presidents Jeffrey Freitas, Jessica Tang, and Stacy Davis Gates also met with Budapest Lord Mayor Gergely Karácsony, who was a champion for democracy under Victor Orban’s authoritarian rule. They had a chance to discuss how important local governance is, especially when democracy is under threat.

Today, President Coleman, her fellow AFT Vice Presidents Jessica Tang, Stacy Davis Gates, and Jeffrey Freitas, and AFT President Randi Weingarten also met with students from the historic Budapest University of Technology and Economics who helped their teachers with their movement to push back on authoritarian efforts to suppress public education. It is thanks to these student leaders, their teachers, and the entire movement that Hungary was able to vote out Viktor Orbán and stand up for democracy and public education during the most recent election.

President Coleman has been proud to join AFT President Randi Weingarten and three of her fellow AFT Vice Presidents — Jessica Tang from AFT Massachusetts, Stacy Davis Gates from the Illinois Federation of Teachers and Chicago Teachers Union, and Jeffrey Freitas from the California Teachers Union — in Budapest for a Hungary Solidarity Mission to discuss democracy and tour the Egressy Gábor Secondary Technical School. President Coleman has had the chance to meet with students and faculty, tour the school, and see their technical classrooms in action.
