The Conference Built for Urban School Leaders — And the Students Who Are Counting on Them.

The NSBA's 2026 CUBE Annual Conference is October 1–3 at the Marriott Marquis Chicago, and GGI is proud to be part of it.

For nearly 60 years, CUBE has brought together urban school board members from across the country to share strategies, build community, and advance equity for students who need it most. This year's conference features powerful keynote speakers — Linda Cliatt-Wayman, Kareem Weaver, and Tim Wise — along with breakout sessions packed with practical tools for board members, superintendents, and district leaders.

GGI co-administers the Magna Awards program with , which this year recognizes school districts making real, measurable progress on Indoor Air Quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Applications for the 2027 Magna Awards are open right now — and attending GGI's CUBE breakout session this October earns your district 100 points toward your application. That's the largest single-session point opportunity in the entire program.

But there's so much more to CUBE than our session. If you're a school leader working to create healthier, more equitable learning environments, this is the conference built for you.

We posted about this two weeks ago — and we're posting again, because this deadline is too important to miss. 📊

The is accepting proposals for the 2027 Green Schools Conference through June 22, 2026. That's 27 days from today.

This is the national stage for K–12 sustainability work — and it's actively looking for sessions from schools and districts that don't always get the spotlight. Title I schools. Tribal schools. Communities doing incredible work with limited resources. The proposal scoring even gives extra consideration to sessions that center these stories.

If that sounds like your school or district, please consider submitting. Or share this with someone who should. 👇

🥈 Spotlight #4: Salamanca City Central School District wins a 2026 Magna Award — and their story is unlike any other in this series.

Salamanca City Central School District is a small rural district in Western New York, sitting on the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation of Indians. Nearly half of their 1,450 students identify as Native or Native/other/mixed race. About 26% of the surrounding community lives in poverty.

When this district decided to prioritize indoor air quality, they didn't frame it as a compliance requirement or a facilities project. They framed it as a cultural responsibility — rooted in the traditional Indigenous stewardship principle of planning for the next seven generations.

Superintendent Mark Beehler said it best:

"This work is not just about infrastructure; it is about honoring our community, strengthening our schools, and creating a foundation where every student can thrive."

Here's what Salamanca is doing:

🌬️ Integrating IAQ and energy-efficiency investments so every dollar works harder
🔧 Proactive HVAC maintenance to keep systems healthy before problems arise
📋 Long-term planning for facilities that stay resilient for generations
💚 Embedding air quality into their broader vision for student health and community well-being

This is environmental justice in action — and we are proud to celebrate them. 🎉

🌡️ School starts back up in just a few months — but for millions of kids, the heat never really stopped.

As temperatures across the country keep breaking records, too many classrooms remain dangerously hot. And the children most affected? The ones who can least afford it.

A 2025 study from UC Santa Barbara found that Hispanic, Native American, and low-income students are disproportionately enrolled in the schools most exposed to extreme and prolonged heat — the students who deserve the most protection are getting the least. (https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/extreme-heat-in-u-s-schools-disproportionately-affects-marginalized-students/)

And since 1970, the number of school districts dealing with more than 32 sweltering school days per year has grown by 39%. This isn't slowing down. (https://fas.org/publication/extreme-heat-schools/)

The good news: there are real solutions — and we're bringing in an expert to share them.

📅 Join us in just over TWO WEEKS for a free webinar:
👉 Protecting Children from Extreme Heat in Schools

We were honored to stand alongside the City of Camden Government’s Mayor Carstarphen, Councilman Leyba-Martinez, Camden County Police Department, and Camden City School District in celebrating our incredible local crossing guards, everyday heroes who help keep our children and neighborhoods safe! 🚸💚

While crossing guards are often recognized for traffic safety, they also play an important role in sustainability and environmental health. By helping students safely walk to school and encouraging pedestrian safety, they contribute to reducing traffic congestion, vehicle idling, and greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately supporting cleaner air in our community.

A safer walk to school means healthier neighborhoods, stronger communities, and a more sustainable future for all. Thank you to our crossing guards for the care, dedication, and impact you make every single day. We are proud to celebrate you! 🌎♻️

🐜 Warmer weather is arriving — and so are the pests. Is your child's school ready?

As temperatures climb, insects and rodents don't just multiply faster outdoors — they look for cool shelter indoors. That means classrooms, cafeterias, and hallways can become hiding spots for cockroaches, mice, and other pests that directly threaten student health.

Here's what many parents and teachers don't realize: cockroach allergens are one of the leading triggers of childhood asthma — the number one cause of school absenteeism. Kids exposed to them are more likely to miss school, lose sleep, and end up in the emergency room. And these health burdens fall hardest on children in under-resourced schools and communities.

The good news? There's a proven solution called Integrated Pest Management (IPM) — a smarter, safer approach that focuses on preventing pest problems before they start, without heavy reliance on chemical pesticides. It's also a team effort: custodians, teachers, cafeteria staff, and principals all play a role. As EPA experts put it, IPM is as much people management as it is pest management.

🌿 Exciting news from our partners at the National Rural Education Association!

The 2026 National Forum to Advance Rural Education is coming to San Antonio, Texas, October 19–21 — and it's shaping up to be the most inspiring year yet.

This year's theme — Ready, Set, Rural: Creating Opportunity Everywhere — says it all. Rural schools are filled with dedicated teachers, engaged parents, and resilient students who deserve the best. This event brings together the leaders who are making it happen.

▶️ Watch the event video and feel the energy for yourself!

Here's what's new and exciting for 2026:

✅ A brand-new Policy Forum where rural voices actually help shape education policy — not just listen to it.

✅ A live Rural Innovation Showcase where schools from across the country compete to show what's working in their communities. (Spoiler: the ideas are incredible.)

✅ Keynotes from a former rural superintendent turned bestselling author, a media innovator using animation to support student wellbeing, and a national school innovation leader who has worked with the U.S. Department of Education.

At GGI, we're passionate about healthy, sustainable schools for every student — especially those in underserved rural communities. Events like this are where friendships are made, ideas take root, and real change begins.

Early Bird registration is open through July 19!

(🏆 Big news for school districts across the country — the 2027 NSBA Magna Awards are now open!

And this year, the competition just got more equitable. For the first time in the program's 31-year history, winners will be recognized by community type — Urban, Suburban, and Rural — so districts of every size and setting can compete on a level playing field.

The Go Green Initiative is proud to co-sponsor this award alongside The National School Boards Association. We’ve seen firsthand what districts can accomplish when they commit to cleaner air and healthier schools. This year’s 2026 winners are proof:

🏆 East St. Louis SD 189 (IL) — carbon-free schools initiative + 5-year emissions plan
🏆 Issaquah SD 411 (WA) — EPA-aligned IAQ policy with board-level accountability
🏆 Prince George's County Public Schools (MD) — comprehensive IAQ plan through a dedicated Environmental Office
🥈 Salamanca City Central SD (NY) — IAQ improvements grounded in a seven-generations Indigenous stewardship framework
🥈 Boston Public Schools (MA) — air quality sensors in every classroom, nurse’s office, and main office

Here’s the thing: none of these districts did anything out of reach. They developed IAQ plans, engaged their leadership, completed free training, and documented their work. No special budget. No outside consultants. Just committed teams doing the right thing for their students — and your district can do it, too.

Free training and resources are available right now at gogreeninitiative.org/IAQ. The application deadline is October 31, 2026.

Every student deserves to breathe clean air at school. These districts are showing the way — will yours be next?
