We had a great weekend in the mountains certifying tracking dogs. This certification is a 20-24 hour old, 1000-yard track with three turns, two wound beds, and 8 ounces of blood. Trackers put a lot of effort into certification. We would like to congratulate all those who did. We would like to thank our host, the Bruderhof community and Arlo Meier, they go above and beyond for us. We would also like to thank John Patrick from the western chapter for coming out; he drove almost 6 hours to help us, and we are thankful for his efforts and assistance. ļæ¼

This weekend was one where lots of perseverance, learning and good old hard work was celebrated. On Saturday, old and new members alike from Deer Search’s Hudson Valley Founding Chapter gathered to exchange tracking stories from the 2025 season as well as those from years gone by. In addition to this several members, as well as there dogs were recognized for multitude of accomplishments.

Master Handler Certifications were presented to Jeremy DiCesare, David Madore, and Jared Brueggeman.

In addition to this, Jeremy DiCesare’s dog Nicco was honored as a Deer Search Certified Tracking Dog and both of Jared Brueggeman’s dogs, Winnie and Ted were also honored as Deer Search Certified Tracking Dogs.

Darren Doran was again recognized for his outstanding efforts in the tracking community by earning the Schlecpingen Award, which is presented to the Deer Search member taking the most tracks in a single season. Darren has received this award every year since 2017.

And last but certainly not least two dogs met the requirements for induction into the Deer Search Hall of Fame. David Madore’s 8 year old Teckel Winston and Jared Brueggeman’s 9 year old Teckel Winnie. Both of these dog’s excel in the field of big game tracking and have over 100 recoveries each. They have made a huge difference in the hunting communities in which they serve and are more than deserving of this honor.

Congratulations to all those recieving recognition for their accomplishments.

A special thank you to Arlo Meier and the Bruderhof Community for welcoming Deer Search and hosting this event. Your kindness and support of the organization are much appreciated!

šŸ“£Tommorow is opening day of southern riflešŸ“£

It’s been a busy past week or so the bucks are on there feet and these cool mornings should make for some good hunting . Here are some tips to successful recover deer after the shot with rifle
• If the deer is still within sight it doesn’t hurt to shoot again
• A very common call for us during gun season is a spinal shock . If the deer drops and is still moving please put another shot in it !
•Don’t take shots at a distance you’ve never shot before
• Use a hunting bullet designed to retain its weight . Match bullets or fmj don’t have the same terminal ballistics
• Mentally mark your hit sight and last sighting .gun hit sometimes don’t show a lot of blood
•Don’t shoot in the neck!!!
•Don’t assume you missed check the hit sight and direction the deer traveled
• Please still follow suggested wait times after the shot ! ( Experienced teams can still track in the rain and snow)
Have a great season be safe and we will be ready if you need us!

🦌 As we head into the busiest time of the year, we want to remind all hunters of something important!

Our Deer Search trackers work incredibly hard to help every hunter who calls, but during the peak of the rut, it’s just not always possible. Some of our trackers will go on 4–5 tracks a day, doing everything they can to help with recoveries across the region.

As a hunter, you can greatly increase your odds of recovery by following the recommended wait times before tracking. Waiting the proper amount of time often makes the difference between success and a lost deer.

šŸŽ„ Here’s a great video that explains why wait times matter so much — please take a few minutes to watch and share.

From all of us at Deer Search, good luck this season and happy hunting! šŸ‚šŸ¾

Continuing from yesterday’s post:

Many of you share similar thoughts to ours. While we do believe grid searching can reduce recovery rates due to ground disturbance, most experienced tracking dogs can work through that contamination with minimal impact.

What we suspect plays a bigger role is how grid searches often push wounded deer farther from the point of loss. Once bumped, a deer typically travels much farther, and occasionally in a completely different direction than before. This, we believe, is why drone recovery rates drop even more than dog recoveries after grid searches.

Drones usually rely on hunter input about the deer’s last known direction, so their search efforts are focused accordingly. If the deer changes course after being bumped, those searches may miss the mark. Additionally, drone recoveries are often limited by flight time and distance, whereas a dog can continue tracking as long as the handler and property boundaries allow.

Those are our working theories. What do you think? We’d love to hear from both tracking dog teams and thermal drone operators. Please keep it respectful as this discussion isn’t about criticizing any method, but about understanding what the data might be telling us.

šŸ“£ Attention all hunters: this weekend, October 11-13, is Youth Weekend. Be aware that it is a rifle hunt, so wear orange. We are all responsible for teaching the next generation sportsmanship, ethics, and safety. Please don't push your young hunter to take a shot outside of their comfort zone. We all want them to have a good first experience, but if you're unsure about the shot, please reach out to us as soon as possible, even if it's just to pick a tracker's brain. Be safe, good luck, and we can't wait to see some smiling faces!

All of us at Deer Search are ready and excited for the 2025 season. As always, when in doubt, back out and reach out. Especially with crossbow, it is sometimes hard to tell where you hit, and the time to let the animal expire is very important. If you're tracking and seeing dried blood and then fresh blood, you didn’t give the animal enough time. Or, if you're seeing wound beds and keep bumping deer, stop immediately. Don’t hesitate to reach out and have a successful and safe season! We will be ready to help.

Had a great morning in the woods working with some new trackers and their dogs. Deer search isn’t just a resource for the hunters it’s a resource for the trackers as well. A ton of work goes into having top quaility dogs which we strive for. Training days like this are great to see progress and what to work on moving forward. There is a ton of perks of being a member of a local club if you have any interest please reach out!
