IGNITE is a movement of young women who are ready and eager to become the next generation of political leaders. Since our inception in 2010, IGNITE has trained 20,000+ young women to discover and flex their political power. From a small pilot program in Oakland, California, IGNITE has become the nation's leading organization h

arnessing political ambition, community building, and leadership skills among young women and girls. Our model moves young women to run and win, and it dramatically increases their political engagement on every level. We also know that programming is not enough: we uplift inspiring voices among our community to celebrate and cultivate young women's ambitions.

Independence Day is about more than freedom. It is about people
speaking truth to power.

Quick history lesson: 👇

In the late 1700s, Americans were tired of paying taxes to Britain but not having a seat in the British Parliament. So what happened? People organized. ✊ They protested.

They spoke out against the British rulers. 🗣️ In June of 1776, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman drafted the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1976, Congress adopted it. This is our country’s origin story.

Something to think about as we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday this weekend🗯️: Power isn’t usually given away; it’s hard-earned. When people work together, that’s when change happens.

So let’s celebrate our nation’s founders as well as the generations of leaders, women and men from across the country and from different cultural backgrounds, who continued to promote the rights of all Americans in the years since. 🙌

And let’s celebrate the young women across our community and across our country who are continuing to advocate for the rights written 250 years ago in the Declaration of Independence: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.💗

What does Title IX have to do with women´s equality?

🔎 On June 23, 1972, legislation was passed to prohibit sex-based discrimination and harassment in education programs receiving federal funding.

This legislation was crucial for:
📖 Promoting gender equity in education
🛑 Protecting students against sexual harassment and violence
👟 Expanding student athletic opportunities

This federal law has since served as a foundation for states to strengthen their own protections to ensure all women (including transgender women) have access to quality education. ✊

More than 50 years later, the work continues.

In 2024, our IGNITE community, through advocacy and testimony, helped pass a legislative package in California further advancing these protections.

This is the impact of sustained civic engagement and community leadership. It’s how we build a more equitable future. 💗

Today is Juneteenth, and we are honoring activism and liberation. ✊

On this day, 250,000 enslaved African Americans in Texas gained their freedom.

This day represents a powerful moment of emancipation—the day that led to new opportunities and new futures.

Juneteenth marked a new beginning and contributed to laws enacted that have enabled Black people to:

🗳️ Run for political office
🎓 Build and attend schools
❤️ Reunite with family members
⚖️ Pursue justice and civil rights protections through the legislative process

This is what correcting historic tragedies looks like.
