A Flood Watch has been issued for portions of southern and central Iowa from late this afternoon through Friday morning. Rainfall totals of 2–4 inches are anticipated, with locally higher amounts possible, leading to a risk of scattered flash flooding and urban ponding. A second round of heavy rain and storms is expected late Friday. Motorists are reminded to never drive through flooded roadways. Turn Around, Don't Drown!

It's official. Chief Greg Smith will retire from the Cedar Rapids Fire Department at the end of June. After 32 years of service to the City of Cedar Rapids, it's time for a new adventure.

Chief Greg Smith started at CRFD in 1994 and has been the Fire Chief since 2019. We'll sit down with him for a longer interview and walk down memory lane as we get closer to his final days with us. For now, he's still working hard to lead our department, advocate for firefighters, and giving his all to the performance of his duties.

We will host a public goodbye open house in June for Chief Smith.

A nationwide search will start very soon for the next Chief of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. We'll keep you updated on that process.
