BECA BECA is a Non-Profit (501c3) organization that focuses on helping families break the cycle of illiter And it's not.

Did you know that in Guatemala it costs roughly $200 a year for an elementary-aged kid to go to school?🧐

This doesn't seem like much huh? Unless you make an average of $25 a month to feed your family, pay utilities, AND send your kids to school. 😨

That means to send ONE of your kiddos to school would take as much as 8 months of your salary.🤯

But what about your other kids? 😔

Though parents wo

uld LOVE for their kids to get a good education to make better lives for themselves, they often are left without many options. Kids are pulled out of school to help work in the field, take care of their siblings, or other household chores. The current costs for supporting students through school are:
Elementary student: $200/year
Basico (equivalent to junior high): $350/year
Carera (equivalent to high school): $600/year

We can't let International Woman's Day pass without recognizing the woman who makes this all possible.

Dominga is our Boots-On-The-Ground Gal who helps deliver supplies to our students, keeps track of their grades, helps us know what support we can offer to struggling students, is an intermediary between us and the teachers... and SO much more.

Dominga is a woman who fiercely believes in our cause. She works diligently to make the world a better place.

Thank you Dominga for all that you do!

Happy International Women's Day!

One of our focuses here at BECA is to help support women's education.

We have awarded 96 scholarships this year out of which 45 (almost 50%!) are to female students:
- Primaria: 7/17
- Basico: 12/28
- Carrera and Bachillerato: 14/23
- University: 12/28

We are so proud of our female students and look forward to watching them reach new heights through education!

We are so inspired by Juana's story and dedication to helping other Guatemalan women succeed.

Please take a moment to share this post with someone who could use some good news!

Patza School update:

Those of you following a long know we have been piloting a new kind of scholarship. Cedar Ridge Elementary adapted a small two room school in Patza.

The humble teachers did not ask us for much- garbage cans and supplies for the kids, but as we looked around we knew there was more we could do. The had piles of books laying around, moldy bookshelves, and broken chairs that had become a safety hazard for small children.

Cedar Ridge Elementary got together to raise the money needed to hire a local carpentar to make new chairs and bookshelves.

Hoping a praying that 2022 will bring more radical generosity into the world.

We know that change starts with one. What's one thing you can do to be more radically generous?

Over the last year we have partnered with Cedar Ridge Elementary to pilot a new type of sponsorship.

The student council raised money to adopt and sponsor the Patza school.

The results were better than we could have ever hoped. We are looking for more schools that are wanting to sponsor a school in Guatemala to help the kiddos in that area continue their studies.

All the kids have been given school supplies and new shoes. We are also working on building new chairs and bookshelves. Stay tuned for updates!

Teofilo comes from very humble circumstances. He is the only one of his 6 siblings who has decided to continue with his studies.

It’s been an uphill climb for him, but we are so proud of the progress he has made! 👏

Teofilo viene de circunstancias muy humildes. De los 6 hermanos Teofilo es el único que tomó la decisión de seguir con sus estudios.

Ha sido muy difícil, pero estamos muy orgullosos de su progreso!

Welcome to BECA!

BECA (Bridging Education Costs for All) is the Spanish word for “scholarship.” As an organization, BECA works to identify students with the desire to continue their education but lack the means to stay in school.

Currently working in the highlands of Guatemala, BECA has students on scholarship from kindergarten to post-high school programs at university and technical schools. The BECA scholarships change the lives of the students and the families of the recipients.
