Citizen science underway! πŸ€“

Today, Lake Champlain TU members gathered to learn how to build stream data-logging devicesβ€”and build them we did!

We were recently awarded an Embrace A Stream grant from Trout Unlimited to monitor depth and temperature in several North Country streams using HOBO data loggers.

Today was our first step: learning the setup and assembling the equipment.

In a few weeks, we’ll be deploying them in the water. More updates to come!

What an incredible afternoon! 🎬🐟

On March 7th, over 60 community members packed into Hudson Hall at SUNY Plattsburgh for the Scale of Change Film Tour β€” one of just two U.S. stops on this international conservation film series.

And wow, did our North Country community show up.

We screened four powerful short films from HookΓ©, taking us from the Delay River to the Canadian wilderness to the Swedish backcountry β€” all telling stories of wild fish, wild rivers, and the people who love them. Between films, we held a raffle packed with fly fishing books, art prints, hand-tied salmon flies, and more.

The highlight of the afternoon? Bill Bullock, Vice President with the Atlantic Salmon Federation, joined us to open the program and share what's at stake for wild Atlantic salmon β€” and what restoration efforts are making possible.

Our chapter came in committed to donating $1,000 to ASF. But our attendees? They matched our energy and then some. Together, we raised $1,160 for the Atlantic Salmon Federation β€” handed directly to Bill Bullock at the close of the event. πŸ’š

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, donated, and helped make this happen. Events like this remind us why this work matters β€” and that our community cares deeply about the Saranac River, wild fish, and the future of our local waterways.

More to come on the local dam removal conversation. Stay tuned. 🎣

We're very excited to offer a way for community members to volunteer to help anglers in their communities make the switch to lead-free tackle!

We are recruiting volunteers to train as Tackle Box Ambassadors! Ambassadors will learn how to talk about the impacts of lead on wildlife and learn strategies for connecting with anglers in their communities to offer tackle box inventories, identifying lead tackle, offering to remove it for recycling, and providing some lead-free tackle as alternatives. Anglers who turn in lead tackle will also receive vouchers to get $10 more of free lead-free tackle from Adirondack tackle shops.

Anyone interested in becoming a Tackle Box Ambassador can join the first training, taking place on Sat. March 21 from 11 am - 1 pm at the Saranac Lake Free Library. It's free to register, and participants will receive lunch, a free t-shirt, and all the materials they will need to offer tackle box inventories in their communities.
