The NYSDEC announced the following - The Upper Works parking area is going to be getting a new vault toilet installed towards the end of October. Please respect areas marked with cones and flagging so that the crews and equipment can accomplish this task. Let's give you the back story.

In the last 12 months, the Forty-Sixers received several large donations. We are very grateful for these very generous donations. The Executive Committee of the Forty-Sixers decided these large donations should be separated from our traditional sources of income and instead be used for special opportunities to reinvest in the Adirondacks – leading to the creation of a new 4 person committee that we call – DART (Donation Allocation Response Team). This committee has met several times, policies were drafted, reviewed and approved by the Executive Committee regarding these donations. The DART committee considers how best to distribute these significant donations and makes recommendations to the Executive Committee who approves the projects.

One of our first projects is the Upper Works Trailhead Comfort Facilities. The 46ers worked with several partners on this project; The Town of Newcomb, OSI, the APA, and NYSDEC. Upper Works is one of our most popular High Peaks Trailheads. It has seen significant work in the recent past by our partners in developing accessible trails, historical preservation work, an enlarged parking area and more. The one item that was missing to provide environmental protection for the area and to enhance the visitor experience was adequate restroom facilities. The 46ers, along with our partners discussed plans, did research, and purchased an accessible vault toilet that has the capacity to serve the area for many, many years. Proper facilities will provide environmental protection of the area, preserve the wilderness, enhance the historical preservation work that has already been done and will be fully accessible. Multiple user groups will benefit from this infrastructure improvement. The Town of Newcomb Highway Department staff will provide the site work for installation which is expected to occur in mid October. The Town Highway staff will maintain the facilities.

The Town of Keene has announced that, due to the lack of a driver, the Garden Shuttle will NOT be running this weekend. The Town is making contingency plans to control traffic, parking, and pedestrian safety for those walking up the road. Details as they are available.
Given this unfortunate situation, this would be a good weekend to car pool with your hiking friends and to have a plan B and a plan C ready to go - and don't forget to let the person back home know which one you are going with! Stay safe and have fun!

As we head into thoughts of holiday gift giving, we often recieve questions about the use of our logo. We have posted the organizations policy on our website and hope this will answer your questions: https://adk46er.org/intellectual-property-policy/

Plan ahead and shop our merchandise offerings early!

From time to time, the Forty-Sixers are asked by members or vendors whether they can use our trademarked logos to create something that uses our intellectual property. We do not provide members or vendors with blanket approval to use our intellectual property. However, a member may request approval....

How about some “road magic” for our Adopt a Highway Crew today? If you see them out there, a hot beverage would taste great, a beep and a thank you yelled out the window would be nice too!
