Thanks to our loving and generous community partners, the Black Platteville Community Network has been granted the opportunity to host a free private screening of the 2023 live-action adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey. The Little Mermaid follows mermaid princess Ariel who makes a deal with a treacherous sea witch Ursula to trade her voice to human legs in order to impress Prince Eric, who is saved from a shipwreck, before the time runs out.

***All families are welcome, however priority is given to Black children and caregivers. ***

“If you are born and raised in Platteville and decide not to go to college, then there are very few opportunities for you in town and with limited resources that are difficult to access.”

As I spoke these words I thought of all the Platteville children I've othermothered and the tribulations they faced. I see you becoming young adults with few prospects and little or no help. I think of Ronald, and imagine if he'd gotten support or didn't experience racism in hiring.

We have waitlists for mental health support and Inequitable treatment abounds. We have to do better! How many more must be lost?

The federal waiver that permitted universal free school meals expired June 30. This meant that some returned to school with a new unexpected financial burden. Especially those folks with kids who started school during the pandemic.

That said Subversive Social Work will provide free lunches to Platteville Families in need throughout the 2022-2023 school year. We will also support any outstanding food bills for students in the Black Platteville Community Network - BLKPlattCom
