Arc of Southington The Arc of Southington is an advocacy organization and a service provider focusing on people with cognitive, intellectual, and developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Southington provides a variety of services and supports, operating eleven CLA’s and CRS’s that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We are funded through the CT Department of Developmental Services. Our clients range in age from teen to elderly. Supports for each individual are based on their specific needs and preferences. We also provide Individual Support Services to people who live in their own homes, some alone, others with a housemate or spouse. Day services are provided to participants on an individualized basis. We do not offer group supported employment. More and more individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are choosing to self-direct their supports and receive individual budgets to do so. The Arc of Southington works with individuals, their case managers, families and fiscal intermediaries. The Recreation Program, funded by the Town of Southington, offers adults with disabilities typical leisure activities in the local community alongside their non-disabled peers.

We were proud to sponsor and participate in the People First of Connecticut 2026 Self-Advocacy Conference this past weekend!

It was an incredible opportunity to come together, learn, connect, and celebrate the importance of self-advocacy and giving everyone a voice. The breakout sessions were informative and provided valuable insights, while the keynote speakers were truly inspirational including Madison Tevlin, from the movie Champions!

Happy Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Appreciation Week!

This week, we celebrate and recognize the incredible Direct Support Professionals who show up every day with compassion, dedication, patience, and heart.

Our DSPs do so much more than provide support. They help people build independence, reach their goals, try new things, be part of their communities, and live the lives they choose. They celebrate successes, provide encouragement during challenges, advocate for the people they support, and make a difference in countless ways, often behind the scenes.

Thank you for being the heart of our organization and for making a difference every day!

People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) rely on the support of direct support professionals (DSPs) in order to live and work in their homes and communities. However, low wages due to insufficient reimbursement rates have led to high turnover and vacancy rates in the DSP workforce. The loss of DSPs across the field has left many people without stable access to community-based supports and services.

Because we need data to understand the scope of the workforce crisis before we can fully solve the problem, the creation of a standard occupational classification (SOC) for DSPs is essential to ensuring people with I/DD have access to critical supports and services. A unique SOC for DSPs would help states and the federal government collect data on demographics and turnover rates. This, in turn, will help inform policies to address the workforce shortage. A DSP SOC will also help states more accurately set rates, which could positively impact DSP wages.
