Stephen Alexis (1889–1962)
Today, we pay tribute to Stéphen Alexis, a man whose commitment to his country, passion for Haitian literature, and dedication to African culture will forever be etched in our memories. Born in Gonaïves, Haiti, on November 29, 1889, Stéphen Alexis devoted his life to enriching Haitian society through his roles as a diplomat, journalist, historian, and educator.
His remarkable career began in teaching, where he inspired many generations as a history and literature professor at the Lycée des Gonaïves. As a journalist, he played a crucial role in disseminating ideas and social critique through influential publications such as Le Matin, L’Artibonite, and Haïti Miroir. In politics, he held significant positions, including that of permanent delegate to the UN and representative of Haiti to the United Nations Interim Commission.
Stéphen Alexis made significant contributions to Haitian literature through his written works, which include:
• "Le N***e Masqué" (The Masked Negro), a poignant novel that serves as a powerful reflection on the Haitian condition and the American occupation.
• "The Black Liberator", the most comprehensive biography of Toussaint Louverture, offering an in-depth look at the life and legacy of Haiti’s most renowned revolutionary leader.
• "Abrégé d’Histoire d’Haïti" (Summary of Haitian History), an essential historical text that provides a detailed overview of Haiti’s history, from its origins to contemporary times.
Despite facing political adversities, including imprisonment and suffering for his convictions, Stéphen Alexis remained steadfast in his dedication to justice and the rights of his people. His courage and integrity have left an indelible mark on the history of Haitian literature and Afro-Caribbean culture.
On August 15, 1962, Stéphen Alexis passed away in exile in Caracas, Venezuela, under François Duvalier’s regime.
His life and work continue to inspire those who are committed to social justice and the preservation of Haitian culture.
Today, we celebrate the legacy of Stéphen Alexis, whose literary work and political engagement remain a beacon for future generations. His invaluable contribution to Haitian literature and culture is a source of inspiration and an example of dedication to his country and its people.
