🖤🐾 Happy National Black Dog Day!

Did you know there’s actually a day dedicated to celebrating black dogs? And there’s a pretty interesting reason behind it!

October 1st is National Black Dog Day, a day created to bring awareness to something often referred to as “Black Dog Syndrome.”

The idea is that black dogs tend to get overlooked in shelters and may have a harder time getting adopted than their lighter-colored friends.

There are a few theories behind this, including how difficult black dogs can be to photograph, old superstitions surrounding black animals, and even the fact that their facial expressions can be harder to see in certain lighting.

Now, research on whether black dogs actually experience lower adoption rates is mixed, but it’s still a great opportunity to bring attention to some pretty amazing dogs who deserve just as much love!

And of course, we couldn’t let today go by without giving a shoutout to Padfoot, our handsome black Lab, who just so happens to be one of the handsomest black dogs around. 🖤🐾

🐶 Could YOU be our next Puppy Raiser/Foster Trainer? 🐕‍🦺

We’re looking for a few caring, dedicated volunteers to help raise and train some of the adorable puppies currently in the ASA Service Dogs program!

Becoming a puppy raiser is one of the most meaningful ways to give back to the disability community. You’ll help a future service dog learn the skills they’ll need to change someone’s life—all while learning from our team along the way.

🐾 Make a lasting impact in someone’s life.
🐾 Learn practical dog training skills with guidance and support.
🐾 Be part of a passionate community that is changing lives, one service dog at a time.
🐾 A wonderful volunteer opportunity for individuals, families, retirees, and homeschool students looking for meaningful, hands-on experience.

No previous dog training experience is required—we’ll help guide you every step of the way!

A huge THANK YOU to Central Lending for your incredibly generous donation to ASA Service Dogs! ❤️🐾

Our team had such a great time stopping by to personally say thank you and introduce a few of our assistance dogs! Visits like this are not only a wonderful opportunity to connect with and educate our community, but they’re also fantastic real-world training experiences for our dogs in training. Meeting new people, practicing calm behaviors, and working in new environments all help build the confidence and skills they’ll need for their future partners.

We truly enjoyed meeting everyone at Central Lending, and we’re so grateful for your support. Your generosity helps us continue training life-changing service dogs for individuals with disabilities, and we can’t thank you enough for being part of our mission.

April 2nd is World Autism Awareness Day 🐕‍🦺💙

At ASA Service Dogs, we work with families who are navigating life with autism—and we’ve seen firsthand how much the right dog, trained with purpose, can help.

Autism service dogs can support in so many ways, including:
• Deep pressure therapy and grounding tasks to help calm the nervous system and deescalate meltdowns
• Interruption and redirection tasks
• Creating routine, structure, and predictability
• Increasing confidence in public settings
• Providing a sense of responsibility and growing independence
• Encouraging communication and connection
• And of course… being a steady, judgment-free best friend 🐾

Many of these dogs also learn to recognize early signs of stress—stepping in before things escalate.

And just as important—this isn’t just life-changing for her boy or her girl, it supports the entire family.

It’s not an overnight process, and it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution—but when it’s the right fit, it can truly open doors.

The photos shared here are a few of the ASD teams placed through our nonprofit over the years—families and dogs growing together, learning together, and building something really special.

We’re grateful every day to be a small part of these journeys 💙🐾

🚨 Exciting Announcement!! 🐐🐕‍🦺

We’re so excited to officially share something we’ve been working on behind the scenes…

In addition to our highly trained service dogs, ASA Service Dogs is now offering fully trained Service Goats!!

Yes—you read that right.

Service goats bring a unique set of skills to the table, including:
• Natural terrain stability and balance support 🏔️
• Gentle grounding presence
• Highly motivated food-driven task work (seriously… very motivated)
• And of course… unmatched personality

Our team has been carefully developing this program to expand accessibility and provide alternative options for individuals who may benefit from a different type of working partner.

We are currently accepting a limited number of applications for our first group of Service Goat placements. More details coming soon!
