If you ask Buster, Sunday was invented specifically for chasing tennis balls in the yard. If you ask Bernie, Sunday is for sleeping in until noon. Either way, our rescue dogs know how to do weekends right!
We are moving into the final stretch of Clear the Shelters with NBC 5 and Telemundo 39, and we are working hard to connect Bernie, Dobby, and Buster with adopters or foster parents in the Dallas area. At Abandoned Pet Project, our ultimate goal is to get our dogs out of commercial boarding for good! Dobby and Buster are currently living in boarding facilities while they wait for their second chances. Boarding keeps them safe, but a kennel facility can never replace the comfort of a real home, a soft dog bed, and a family of their own.
Meanwhile, sweet Bernie is waiting in a foster home for her permanent forever family. All three of these long-stay heroes have so much love to give. Bernie is a gentle nanny-dog who loves snuggles, Dobby is an intelligent Doberman mix who loves learning, and Buster is a playful Lab mix who loves fetch. For the remainder of August during Clear the Shelters, all three of these wonderful dogs have $0 waived adoption fees for approved applicants!

It is $0 Fee-Waived Friday! Today we are highlighting Bernie, our gorgeous 54-pound nanny-dog who has been waiting for her forever family since 2020. As part of our recurring Friday event and national Clear the Shelters, Bernie’s adoption fee is 100% waived ($0) for an approved home!
Bernie is a sweet, patient soul who is house-trained, crate-trained, and incredible with kids. She is currently enjoying life in a foster home while her allergies (she is sensitive to a lot, including cats and birds) are kept in check with regular baths and a modest $50/month medication routine. Bernie is dog-friendly for the most part with slow introductions, but she needs a home without cats or birds to prevent allergy flare-ups. At Abandoned Pet Project, we hate having to pay for commercial boarding, but it is often the only alternative to leaving a dog in a crowded shelter facing euthanasia. Right now, Dobby and Buster are living in boarding facilities while they wait for their forever homes. Fostering them eliminates those heavy monthly expenses and allows us to redirect funds toward life-saving medical care.
Fostering a dog is completely free for you. We provide the food, crate, leash, bowls, and cover all medical needs while you give them a home environment to thrive in. Here is a critical reminder for all Dallas/DFW pet parents: No matter how much your furry friend loves car rides that even on a mild day, the temperature inside a parked car can rise by 20 degrees in just ten minutes. On an August day in Texas, the inside of a vehicle can quickly reach lethal temperatures, even with the windows cracked and the car parked in the shade.

Dogs overheat much faster than humans do, and leaving them in a vehicle for just a quick minute can quickly turn into a medical emergency. Leave your pets at home in the air conditioning when running errands this summer. Let's keep our local pets safe, healthy, and cool!

Buster has been with us since he was just 3 months old, and while his littermates all found forever families years ago, he is still waiting for his turn to step out of commercial boarding. Buster is a smart, energetic boy who loves outdoor fetch sessions and learning new things. Because he is a sensitive, shy soul who gets overwhelmed easily, Buster requires an adult-only home that can give him time to decompress. Bernie may weigh 54 pounds, but in her mind, she is the ultimate lap dog! This sweet 8-year-old pit mix has a gentle, motherly soul that makes everyone around her feel instantly loved. She was saved from a local shelter right before being euthanized back in 2020, and she has been spreading joy ever since.
Bernie is currently living in a cozy foster home, where she proves every day what a turnkey house dog she is. She deals with a variety of environmental allergies, including sensitivities to cats and birds, that are easily managed with regular baths and a daily medication costing just $50 a month. She loves car rides, soft dog beds, and leaning in for big body hugs. Best of all, her adoption fee is $0 all month long for Clear the Shelters!

Welcome to Wednesday! Whether we are welcoming brand new emergency rescues into our system or working to find foster homes for our long-stay dogs, foster parents are the backbone of Abandoned Pet Project. Right now, Dobby and Buster are spending their days in boarding facilities, and we urgently need Dallas/DFW residents to step up and foster them.
When you foster a long-stay dog, you give them a quiet living room to relax in while saving our non-profit thousands of dollars in monthly boarding expenses. That money goes directly toward funding medical surgeries and rescue pulls for homeless pets across DFW. We supply the food, crate, bowls, and vet care, so you just supply the home and love.
